Run to Win

“Don’t you realise that in a race everyone runs, but only one person gets the prize? So run to win! All athletes are disciplined in their training. They do it to win a prize that will fade away, but we do it for an eternal prize. So I run with purpose in every step. I am not just shadowboxing. I discipline my body like an athlete, training it to do what it should. Otherwise, I fear that after preaching to others I myself might be disqualified.”
1 Corinthians 9:24-27 NLT

The Corinthian society was highly competitive, and the ancient Olympic Games were founded in Greece in the eighth century BC. The modern Olympic Games were founded on the same principles and were restarted in 1896. The predominant race in ancient Greece was known for its prowess in running, and Paul used that analogy in the verses we are reading today. But Paul was not suggesting that Christianity was an athletic sport in which there was only one winner. Neither was he implying that there was some competition among individual believers. Instead, Paul was referring only to the effort and dedication exhibited by the athletes: that was what the believer should duplicate in their pursuit of Christ. 

The point of participating in a race is to win, and winning takes work. Athletes who hope to be competitive must exercise significant control over themselves in all that they do. This would include not just physical training, but also strict diets, regular sleep schedules, abstaining from harmful substances, and exercising caution in their behaviour. Through it all, they would keep their focus on winning the race and getting the prize: a wreath. At the games in Corinth, a pine wreath was placed on the head of the winner, much like a crown. If Paul were writing this today, he might refer to the gold medal of the modern Olympics. 

However, the wreath sought after by the Greek athletes was perishable, Paul wrote. The prize a Christian aspires to win is imperishable; it is eternal. To accomplish that, Paul indicated that considerable human effort was required to win the award. This all sounds logical, particularly to people who are naturally competitive and able to train hard in whatever discipline they choose, be it athletic or something else. But then we stop and think for a moment. We don’t have to strive by human effort to win the prize of eternal life, because Jesus did that for us. The Amplified version of Ephesians 2:8-9 reads, “For it is by grace [God’s remarkable compassion and favour drawing you to Christ] that you have been saved [actually delivered from judgment and given eternal life] through faith. And this [salvation] is not of yourselves [not through your own effort], but it is the [undeserved, gracious] gift of God; not as a result of [your] works [nor your attempts to keep the Law], so that no one will [be able to] boast or take credit in any way [for his salvation]”. Put simply, it is through faith that we will receive eternal life, and certainly not by our own efforts. 

So what is the point that Paul was making, and how does that impact pilgrims like us today? Paul’s metaphor of an athlete in training did not apply to his desire to get to Heaven one day, but instead to the service he was conducting in spreading the Good News about Christ. Paul was totally focused on his mission to see souls saved for the Kingdom of God, and to achieve that, he put his body through much hardship to achieve his goal and win the prize. His efforts for God eclipsed everything else that he did, even at times impacting his basic life needs. He was afraid that his efforts would have been insufficient to win the race and disqualify him from achieving his goal. Paul was a driven man, totally focused on his mission and the goals that it contained. 

And so we turn to us pilgrims. What are we focused on? Is there a “race” that we are trying to win for God? And if so, what is our personal race? Many believers do little outside of attending church meetings. There, they have the faith to believe in Jesus, but do little with that faith. In Ephesians 2:10, we read, “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do”. We note that Paul wrote that we are not saved by our good works but saved for good works. So, we pilgrims must ask ourselves about the “good works” that Jesus prepared for us to do. Many Christians work in charities and other organisations to share God’s love with less fortunate fellow citizens. A friend of mine works part-time in his retirement at a food bank, assembling packs for those unable to afford the basics of life. Other people will do what they can to be “salt and light” in their communities. Even others engage in philanthropic acts of kindness, such as what happened to my niece, who was financially supported through college by a benefactor. James wrote, “In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead” (James 2:17), and so it is.

We pilgrims must pray for God’s guidance in the “good works” that we do. It is easy to burden our lives with things that God doesn’t want us to do, with poor results. We have all been granted at least one gift (Matthew 25), and we must use the gifts we have been given for the benefit of the church or fellowship to which we belong, as well as for our neighbours and friends. To ignore our gifts is not an option in the Kingdom of God. 

Dear Heavenly Father. We thank You for the fullness of life that You have granted us through Jesus. Please guide us in the ways You wish us to follow, and the works of service You have pre-ordained for us. We love You and thank You for Jesus, and for all that He did for us at Calvary. We worship You today. Amen.

Spiritual Food

“Then Jesus explained: “My nourishment comes from doing the will of God, who sent me, and from finishing his work.”
John 4:34 NLT

Just a couple of verses before our Scripture today, we read, “But Jesus replied, “I have a kind of food you know nothing about”“. The disciples were puzzled, not knowing how Jesus had gained access to bread, meat or some other item of food, because He was in a desolate place, sitting by a well, and talking to a Samaritan woman. So Jesus had to explain what He meant to His disciples, highlighting two sources of spiritual nourishment – doing God’s will and doing His work. As we considered yesterday, there are two kinds of food. One is for feeding our physical bodies so that they remain healthy and nourished. The other is for doing the same for our spirits. Jesus came to this planet as a human being so He needed both kinds of food, just as we do. And just as there are different kinds of physical foods, there are different kinds of spiritual food. Food in all its forms provides a variety of nutrients, and just restricting ourselves to a diet of, for example, burgers and chips, will soon result in malnutrition and the fruit of it will be obesity. In the same way, our spiritual diets consist of many sources of nutrients, all supplied to us from our Heavenly Father. So we pray and read the Bible of course, but there are some practical requirements as well, as Jesus told His disciples. 

Doing God’s will is well documented in the Bible. For example, we read in Psalm 40:8 that it is a source of joy. “I take joy in doing your will, my God, for your instructions are written on my heart.” Every time we pray the Lord’s Prayer, we pray “may Your will be done”. God’s will is also that we do good; “For this is the will of God, that by doing good you may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men” (1 Peter 2:15). And there are many other verses that refer to God’s will. The sweet spot in our relationship with God is when we are doing His will. The knowledge of that will sustain us and support us when the going gets tough, when the obstacles before us seem insurmountable, and when everybody tells us we are out of God’s will for our lives, even when we know, through faith, otherwise.

Jesus also said His nourishment came from doing God’s work. We read in Colossians 3:23, “Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people“.  A common misconception is that doing God’s work is doing good to, or for, other people. So people assume that volunteering in a soup kitchen providing meals for the homeless is doing God’s work. It may well be, but as Paul wrote to the Colossians, whatever we do can be considered doing God’s work, with the caveat that we must be doing it as though God is our employer. Another common misconception is that our salvation can be assured by doing good works. Paul quashed that thought in Ephesians 2:9-10, “Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago”. The previous verse, Ephesians 2:8, reads, “God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God“. Our salvation depends on the grace of God alone, and not on what we do, even if our activity is what would be considered “God’s work”. So we are saved for good works, and not by good works.

So, fellow pilgrims, the next time we enjoy a physical meal, perhaps we should also consider a spiritual meal. There is nothing like a balanced diet to keep us fit and healthy.

Dear Father God. You fed Your people with manna in the wilderness, but today You feed us through Your Son, Jesus, and the power of Your Spirit. We are so grateful. Amen.

Glory and Honour and Peace

There will be trouble and calamity for everyone who keeps on doing what is evil—for the Jew first and also for the Gentile. But there will be glory and honour and peace from God for all who do good—for the Jew first and also for the Gentile. For God does not show favouritism.”

There is a dichotomy between evil and good, as Paul explained in these verses from his letter to the Roman Christians, that we are considering today. Considering a person’s behaviour, there is “trouble and calamity” for doing evil, and “glory and honour and peace” for doing good. Black and white. No shades of grey. But what does “for all who do good” actually mean. What was in Paul’s thinking?

There are plenty of verses in the Bible about doing good. In Galatians 6:9-10 we read, “So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up. Therefore, whenever we have the opportunity, we should do good to everyone—especially to those in the family of faith“. Doing good to everyone is not a difficult concept to understand. We look out for our elderly neighbour, helping them with shopping or a task in their house. We use our resources to perhaps take someone to hospital when they visit the out-patients. We provide a meal for someone in need. we help our children with their homework. The list of possibilities for doing good is endless. Doing good within our societies, communities and families holds them together, as otherwise they would fall apart.

But these are all ways in which we do good to others. But what about doing good to ourselves? We read in Philippians 1:6, “And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns“. We must also consider doing good to ourselves. Now, this is far more contentious because it means we should perhaps be considering our inner persons, body, soul and spirit. Take our bodies, for instance. I think we will all agree that some foods are good for us, and others are not. Should we be considering doing good to ourselves by eating the right foods in the correct quantities? And are we engaged in practices that are harmful to our bodies? Enough said on that one! And then we have our spirits. They need feeding as well. A daily diet of Scripture and prayer can only do us good.

Paul said we will receive “glory and honour and peace” by doing good. Honour may happen in our lifetimes, recognised perhaps by an award of one kind or another. But most people who are doing good will not be recognised in this life. It’s the same with glory. Something that we are banking for the next life. However, we can experience peace in our lives today. That comfort we achieve in knowing that the life of someone around us has been made a bit easier. Peace, because we don’t have on our consciences something we should have done for someone else, but didn’t do it. Peace, in these troubling and challenging times is something that is invaluable.

We pilgrims are the glue that holds our societies and communities together. And we achieve that by doing good. Being examples to those around us. Doing good enables us to enjoy “glory and honour and peace from God” both is this life and in the life to come.
