Divided Interests

“I want you to be free from the concerns of this life. An unmarried man can spend his time doing the Lord’s work and thinking how to please him. But a married man has to think about his earthly responsibilities and how to please his wife. His interests are divided. In the same way, a woman who is no longer married or has never been married can be devoted to the Lord and holy in body and in spirit. But a married woman has to think about her earthly responsibilities and how to please her husband. I am saying this for your benefit, not to place restrictions on you. I want you to do whatever will help you serve the Lord best, with as few distractions as possible.”

Was Paul correct with his advice concerning the distractions of marriage? After all, marriage is an ordained feature of human life, and in its most basic sense, it is intended to continue the human race. However, anyone reading these verses can draw several conclusions that all perhaps point to marriage being something second-best for a Christian. For example, Paul wrote that an unmarried man can spend his time being devoted to serving God. Being married just gets in the way because it comes with “earthly responsibilities” and divides the man’s interests between those of marriage and those of Christian service. Paul continued with much the same theme for a married woman, referring to her “earthly responsibilities and how to please her husband”. It is interesting also to see from Paul’s words that an unmarried woman “can be devoted to the Lord” and is “holy in body and in spirit”, something that implies that a married woman lacks the same holiness. It’s all a bit confusing at first sight and something that needs much prayer to discern what the Spirit is saying, not least to someone who is considering marriage, or is already married and wants to know how he or she could avoid “divided interests”. But we note that the main issue that concerned Paul was about distractions. He wrote, “I want you to do whatever will help you serve the Lord best, with as few distractions as possible”

As a pilgrim today, getting the right balance between the Lord’s work and our earthly lives is very important. Too many Christians are passive believers, happy to attend church on a Sunday, or even the weekly prayer meeting, but do little else to further the Gospel or do anything else that serves God. Is that a bit harsh and judgmental? Possibly, but I have no one in mind except myself. Each believer has to get before God and ask Him what He wants them to do, and then make sure that they are obedient to His call. Paul was intent on furthering the Gospel in his day and was totally sold out to God in that process. Although we are not all Pauls, God has provided each one of us with something that He can use for His service. We read the parable of the three servants in Matthew 25, and note that each of the servants was entrusted with a sum of money while their master was away on a long journey. The important point to note was that each servant was given the money “in proportion to their abilities”. What the three servants did with their money we can read in Matthew 25:16-18, “The servant who received the five bags of silver began to invest the money and earned five more. The servant with two bags of silver also went to work and earned two more. But the servant who received the one bag of silver dug a hole in the ground and hid the master’s money”. Note that Jesus made no mention of servants who were given nothing, with the implication being that all servants would have had something to invest. Elsewhere in Scripture we read “God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another” (1 Peter 4:10). We should also note that God does not expect more from what he has given us than is possible for us to give. Therefore, the servant with two bags of silver was not expected to return five bags. 

So, on the premise that God has given each of us something to invest in His Kingdom, what are we doing with what He has entrusted to us? To Paul, marriage would have seriously curtailed his ability to freely roam around the Middle East on his missionary journeys, because he would have to consider his wife in all his plans. However, on the other hand, a prominent figure in Jesus’ band of disciples was Peter, who was a married man (see Matthew 8:14). We also know that Moses, one of Israel’s most outstanding leaders, was married. So, referring to Jesus’ parable of the three servants, perhaps Paul was a “five bags of silver” servant, and his diligence in investing that gift can be found both in the New Testament through his letters and in churches planted all over the Middle East. So how many “bags of silver” has God entrusted to us? We all will have at least one bag, and consequently, we need to invest it in God’s service.

Paul realised that the believers in Corinth would have been either married or not, and he set out a higher call for God’s people there, that being the importance of “serving the Lord” in the best way possible. That call is still reverberating today, counter-culturally balancing the worldly distractions that are constantly being applied to us pilgrims. We are not all called to become missionaries, heading off to a foreign land to preach the Gospel to a heathen nation. But we are called to a mission field amongst our families and friends, who desperately need to hear the Gospel.

Dear Father God. Please clarify our gifting so that we can do Your work diligently wherever You have called us. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Is Divorce Allowed?

“But for those who are married, I have a command that comes not from me, but from the Lord. A wife must not leave her husband. But if she does leave him, let her remain single or else be reconciled to him. And the husband must not leave his wife. … (But if the husband or wife who isn’t a believer insists on leaving, let them go. In such cases the believing husband or wife is no longer bound to the other, for God has called you to live in peace.)”
1 Corinthians 7:10-11, 15 NLT

On the one hand, Paul received a command from the Lord that neither a husband nor a wife should leave their spouse. But then there seems to be some grounds for divorce in certain circumstances. Jesus said, “But I say that a man who divorces his wife, unless she has been unfaithful, causes her to commit adultery. And anyone who marries a divorced woman also commits adultery” (Matthew 5:32). The prophet Malachi also had some Spirit-driven words about divorce, ““For I hate divorce!” says the Lord, the God of Israel. “To divorce your wife is to overwhelm her with cruelty,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. “So guard your heart; do not be unfaithful to your wife”” (Malachi 2:16). 

The Roman Catholic point of view is very strict when it comes to matters of divorce. A quotation from the Catholic Answers website: “Divorce that “claims to break the marital contract” is never morally allowed. In fact, note that divorce only claims to break marriage but cannot achieve it” … “there is no such thing as a spouse “breaking” the marriage bond or contract. It is immoral to attempt, and a grave sin for the one who has that intent”. However, the Catholics will allow what they refer to as a “civil divorce” to protect the legal interests of an injured party and any children resulting from the marriage, but as long as this course of action is not intended to annul the marriage. 

The Anglican viewpoint on divorce is similar but is less dogmatic when it comes to the situation regarding the remarriage of divorcees. Quote from anglican.org, “Without compromising its teaching that Christian marriage is ‘in its nature’ lifelong, the Church of England has, after much debate, now accepted that, sad as this is, marriages can break down. It has been further accepted that, even for clergy (including bishops), a further marriage can be possible, and can be solemnised in church, where a former spouse is still living – providing that an enquiry has been made into the circumstances surrounding the ending of the first marriage and the inception and coming to fruition of the subsequent relationship. They reflect the Church of England’s emerging view that where a marriage has failed, a fresh start is possible. In part (and perhaps in origin) this development came in response to the reality of civil divorce; one party may, as a point of fact, cause a marriage to end in law, even against the wishes of the other”.

The Elim Movement’s position on the breakdown of marriage is Biblically based; the following is from their “Statement of Beliefs”: “Marriage can only be broken by marital unfaithfulness involving adultery, homosexuality, or incest. While the Scriptures give evidence that the marriage vow and “one-flesh” union are broken by such acts and therefore recognize the breaking of the marriage relationship, the Scriptures do recommend that the most desirable option would be reconciliation”. Regarding divorce, the same Statement reads, “We, therefore, discourage divorce by all lawful means and teaching.  Our objective is reconciliation and the healing of the marital union wherever possible. Marital unfaithfulness should not be considered so much an occasion or opportunity for divorce but rather an opportunity for Christian grace, forgiveness, and restoration. Divorce in our society is the termination of a marriage through a legal process authorised by the State.  While the Church recognises this legal process as an appropriate means to facilitate the permanent separation of spouses, the Church restricts the idea of divorce, in the sense of dissolution of marriage, to reasons specified in Scripture”.  

Across our denominations today, it seems that marriage and divorce are topics that are treated very seriously. However, for the Corinthian church, Paul added an extra possibility regarding the annulment of a marriage, specifically for couples who were unequally yoked. That is, one spouse was a believer and the other an unbeliever. This was to address the specific situation that had occurred when the congregation there was considering celibacy and holiness in their marriages. In this context, he wrote, “If the husband or wife who isn’t a believer insists on leaving, let them go“. However, this is less applicable to married couples today.

As we pilgrims know, the secular society in which we live accepts marriage, but without taking the vows too seriously. Divorce is treated by unbelievers as one of those things, and a better option than having to make the effort to make the marriage work. Many couples today decide that cohabiting is the best option, and that has become a social norm, sadly. But holding fast to the Biblical stand on marriage is something that we do, and we find that it drives another wedge between the two kingdoms, the kingdom of the world and the Kingdom of Heaven. When it comes to relations between believers, whether in marriage or not, the standards of love, acceptance and grace set a very high bar, unthinkable to our secular friends. But then we pause, setting aside all our prejudices and legalisms, and remembering instead all that Jesus has done for us. Those in any sort of Godly relationship, marriage or not, will have difficulties at times, but through Jesus and His Spirit, we are more than conquerors, with the strength to be overcomers. 1 John 5:4-5, “For every child of God defeats this evil world, and we achieve this victory through our faith. And who can win this battle against the world? Only those who believe that Jesus is the Son of God”. We are not in a position without hope, as our unbelieving friends are. Through our faith in the King of kings and Lord of lords, we have a fantastic future and the means to defeat the enemy who comes to steal and destroy. The devil’s hold over our marriages has been broken.

Dear Father God. Thank You for our spouses and our friends. Please help us to take the fragrance of Jesus into all our relationships, this day and every day. Amen.

Eagerly Waiting

“Therefore you do not lack any spiritual gift as you eagerly wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed. He will also keep you firm to the end, so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful, who has called you into fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.”

What do we pilgrims feel about the return of Jesus? Does the thought full us with dread or a pleasurable anticipation? I suppose it all depends on our circumstances, exposing the dilemma facing us Western Christians. We have so much in terms of material wealth that we have a reluctance to let it all go. Even those who complain about their lack of money and difficulties in making ends meet in a society experiencing a cost of living crisis, probably have more possessions available to them than many of the Corinthian believers. It is all relative. Of course there are many, too many, people who suffer from poor mental health and who would welcome relief in a new world that would accompany Jesus’ return, each set free at last from the depression and other conditions that blight their lives. But in the main we fill our lives with more and more “stuff”, clogging up our clarity of thought and vision of a new order in God’s presence. 

The early First Century Christians were convinced that Jesus would return in their lifetimes. In fact, in their expectations He could return at any time, and His imminence focused their minds. They woke up in the morning, thinking “is this the day”? In 1 Thessalonians 4:13-14, Paul reassured the believers that those who have died while they wait for Jesus would not be disadvantaged. He wrote, “Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him”. But the days passed and Jesus did not return. But that did not stop them living as though He would come in the next hour or day. And so they eagerly awaited His return, not lacking “any spiritual gift” and assured that Jesus would “keep [them] firm to the end”

But here we are two thousand years or thereabouts later and Jesus still hasn’t returned. In Matthew 24:3 we read of a conversation between Jesus and His disciples. “As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately. ‘Tell us,’ they said, ‘when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?’” The first part of their question referred to the Temple and Jesus’ prophecy that it was going to be destroyed (this subsequently happened in AD 70). But the disciples were also concerned about the end of the age. Jesus’ answer started in the next three verses with a discourse following of the end time events, “You will hear of wars and rumours of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth-pains”. History records the signs Jesus warned us of, signs that He said were just the “birth-pains”, preceding the End Time events. Recent happenings in the Middle East have caused some speculation that we are in the same situation as the First century Christians, awaiting Jesus’ imminent return. Even some well known and respected pastors have been inclined to comment through social media postings that we could be just about at the time of the “End of the Age”. But Jesus later said, “Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened” (Matthew 24:34. That has obviously not happened so there have been several opinions expressed by theologians over the years about what Jesus meant. We must remember the dual question asked by the disciples and possibly Jesus was referring to the  destruction of the Temple when He said this. Or He might have been referring to a future generation that would still be alive when He returned. But come what may, as a Bible commentary states, “Both views, as well as many others, agree that in at least one sense, Jesus is right now at the gates, ready to return. Nothing stands in His way, and He waits only for the Father to send Him, at the moment only the Father knows. He could arrive at any time”

In Matthew 24:42, we read that Jesus said, “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come”, and in the next chapter Jesus gave three illustrations of the importance of being ready for His return. We have the parables of the Ten Virgins, the Three Servants, and then the Sheep and the Goats. The conclusion in the first parable included the five virgins who were not ready for the return of the Bridegroom, and we read, “Later, when the other five bridesmaids returned, they stood outside, calling, ‘Lord! Lord! Open the door for us!’ “But he called back, ‘Believe me, I don’t know you!’” (Matthew 25:11-12). And Jesus finished with, “So you, too, must keep watch! For you do not know the day or hour of my return” (Matthew 25:13). But the story of the Sheep and the Goats is more than a parable, more than just another Biblical story. It is a stark warning of what is to come and what Jesus will be expecting to find when He returns. 

So back to the question I started with. What do we feel about the return of Jesus? The Corinthian believers were “eagerly awaiting” His return. Are we, and if so, what are we doing about it? We can’t just sit on a Sunday pew, comfortable in our Western Christianity, praying that nothing will disturb our status quo. We have to do the things Jesus has asked of us. And if we dread His return we must look closely at our relationship with Jesus, and pray that He will once again empower our lives through the Holy Spirit within us. 

Father God. We repent of our lukewarm faith, without power and effect. Please forgive us for our spiritual lethargy, and help us once again to find our first love, that time when we first encountered You and were infused with the excitement of knowing You. May we too be like those early believers, eagerly awaiting Your return. In Your precious and holy name. Amen.

Our Testimony About Christ

“I always thank my God for you because of his grace given you in Christ Jesus. For in him you have been enriched in every way – with all kinds of speech and with all knowledge – God thus confirming our testimony about Christ among you.”

“I always thank my God for you and for the gracious gifts he has given you, now that you belong to Christ Jesus. Through him, God has enriched your church in every way—with all of your eloquent words and all of your knowledge. This confirms that what I told you about Christ is true.”

Paul could see so much good in those early Christians in Corinth. He provides the picture of a people who seem to have a new confidence enhanced by the spiritual gifts they had received. They received an ability that came from being “enriched in every way with all kinds of speech and knowledge”. But that wasn’t unusual with the early believers. In Acts 3 we can read of a “man who was lame from birth” and who was carried to the Temple gate every day to beg. Then there came those epic words from Peter, “ … ‘Silver or gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.’ Taking him by the right hand, he helped him up, and instantly the man’s feet and ankles became strong” (Acts 3:6-7). Of course, the people who knew the disabled beggar “were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him” and this gave Peter and John an opportunity to preach the Gospel in a part of the Temple called Solomon’s Colonnade. But this displeased the religious authorities and “They seized Peter and John and, because it was evening, they put them in jail until the next day”(Acts 4:3). Peter and John were brought in for questioning the next day before a meeting of the Sanhedrin and they were asked, ” … By what power or what name did you do this?” (Acts 4:7). Now here’s the point of this story – the next verse started, “Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them: ‘Rulers and elders of the people!” ‭‭Peter started a discourse empowered in the same way as the believers in Corinth. They were all full of the Holy Spirit and the “gracious gifts He has given [them]”. After Peter’s defence before the Sanhedrin, the two disciples were removed from the assembly and we then read something very telling, “When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realised that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus“. That’s what Paul could see in those early Corinthian believers – men and women filled with the Holy Spirit, giving them powers that could only come from God.

Of course we remember the verses where Jesus told His disciples about the Holy Spirit. Jesus was recorded as saying, “When you are brought before synagogues, rulers and authorities, do not worry about how you will defend yourselves or what you will say, for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say” (Luke 12:11-12). The same saying of Jesus is in Matthew 10:19-20, “But when they arrest you, do not worry about what to say or how to say it. At that time you will be given what to say, for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you”. Both versions of what Jesus said stress the importance of recognising the Gift of the Holy Spirit in the lives of believers. I meet Christians who lack the confidence to speak out when an opportunity is presented, because they feel they won’t know what to say. In faith, we all know what to say, because the Holy Spirit will speak through us. 

Believers everywhere, pilgrims like us, have the responsibility, ability and, we pray, the opportunity to provide and speak out our testimonies about Christ. We don’t have to learn a script. We don’t have to stutter and be ashamed about what we know or about our faith. God will lead us and guide us in every situation we come across. How did we come to know Jesus? How has Jesus helped us in our daily lives? It is all there within us, just waiting for the Holy Spirit to form the words and speak them out through our lips, as Jesus said. Some of the best evangelists are new Christians, full of excitement and the Holy Spirit, desperate to tell someone about Jesus. Do we still have that same excitement that we once had?

But we should also take note of something else. In Peter’s discourse before the Sanhedrin he quoted a Scripture from Psalm 118:22, “The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone“. The point is that Peter knew a Bible verse that backed up what he was saying. In the culture of His day, Jesus took it as read that the disciples would have had a degree of Bible knowledge, being schooled at least to a basic level as every Jewish boy was. We pilgrims will not have a religious education to the same degree. We may have been ignorant of Sunday schools when we were small. We may never have entered a church until we met Jesus. But that doesn’t matter because we can read the Bible, and the Holy Spirit will be able to put scriptures into our testimonies because they are stored away somewhere in our memory. But having said that, our God is also a miracle worker. There have been times when some thought or impression has emerged in my mind, and I’ve wondered where it came from, but it has been very relevant to the situation before me. 

Paul reassured the Corinthian believers of the authenticity of his testimony about Christ, and I’m sure his readers had the same. This is something that we pilgrims must also be serious about, also having a testimony about Christ, proclaiming all that He has done for us. It is not just about going to church on a Sunday, and behaving like everyone else for the rest of the week. We must shine like beacons, showing the Light of God to all around us, through our behaviour, speech, attitudes and faith. We present a counter-cultural view of societal life that everyone will see and take note of, and we look for opportunities to share our testimonies with anyone who will listen, using as a bottom line the words that Peter said in Acts 2:38-40, “Peter replied, “Each of you must repent of your sins and turn to God, and be baptised in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. This promise is to you, to your children, and to those far away—all who have been called by the Lord our God.” Then Peter continued preaching for a long time, strongly urging all his listeners, “Save yourselves from this crooked generation!””. We do indeed live in a “crooked generation” and must urge those in our society, those we know and don’t know, about the importance of salvation, and where will spend eternity.

Dear Heavenly Father. Thank You for our testimonies, and we pray for Your presence to bring them to life in the ears of our listeners. It’s all about our Lord Jesus, and all that He has done for us, and we praise and worship You today with deeply thankful hearts. Amen.

Grace and Peace (2)

“This letter is from Paul, chosen by the will of God to be an apostle of Christ Jesus, and from our brother Sosthenes. I am writing to God’s church in Corinth, to you who have been called by God to be his own holy people. He made you holy by means of Christ Jesus, just as he did for all people everywhere who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, their Lord and ours. May God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ give you grace and peace.”

In his greeting to the Corinthian church, Paul finished with “May God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ give you grace and peace”. Yesterday we considered grace, as we receive it in bountiful measure from our Heavenly Father, and as we show it to others as we meet and greet others in our churches and fellowships, and extend it to those in our societies. Today we are going to consider “peace”. Jesus said to His disciples as He was preparing them for His departure from the world, “I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid” (John 14:27). Anything that Jesus said or did was important, but this was a gift to the men who had been with Him for the past three and a half years, a gift of enormous value, a priceless legacy, as they would find out in the years ahead of them. 

One meaning of the word “peace” is the absence of war. As I write, the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East continue, with the added danger of Iran being drawn into conflict. But in addition there are ethnic battles going on in other parts of the world, including the strife bubbling up between supporters of different religions and political groups. Even here in the UK trouble breaks out through marches and other forms of protest, emotions running high and police being needed to “keep the peace”. A constant debate goes on in our universities and on social media as to what constitutes “free speech” and what has crossed the line into hate or racial crimes. “Peace” in our societies seems absent and elusive, and men and women everywhere are fearful, for their future and the future of their children and grandchildren. People become anxious and worried, a state of a lack of peace, when they are unsure and uncertain about the outcome of what is happening around them. In fact, some people become fearful when they take a plane journey or even when they try and cross a busy road, even to the point that they stay at home, as happened during the Covid pandemic, afraid of all sorts of outcomes, most of which are statistically unlikely. The more resilient and optimistic amongst people try and rationalise their feelings by putting their trust in their wealth, possessions and even governments, but there still remains nagging doubts and a plethora of “what if’s”. 

In the Old Testament, the concept of peace was well known. There are verses that support the idea of a lack of conflict between nations, between people and between God and man. When all three boxes were ticked then the Jewish people lived in a state of “peace”. It was, and still is, the custom of the Jews to use the greeting “shalom” when they met with each other. We see its use in scriptures such as 1 Samuel 25:6, “Peace and prosperity to you, your family, and everything you own!” This verse was a forerunner to the episode where David asked for supplies for his men from a man he had been protecting, a man called Nabal. Instead of showing them favour, Nabal shouted insults at David’s messengers and sent them away empty handed. Nabal’s wife saved the day with a truckload of supplies, and David’s response was, “ …  Praise the Lord, the God of Israel, who has sent you to meet me today! Thank God for your good sense! Bless you for keeping me from murder and from carrying out vengeance with my own hands … Then David accepted her present and told her, “Return home in peace. I have heard what you said. We will not kill your husband” (1 Samuel 25:32-33, 35).

Peace was an important state to be in, and ever since the Fall, peace has been in short supply. But Jesus wasn’t meaning a kind of worldly “peace”. The best kind of “peace” that the world offers just doesn’t remove feelings of anxiety and fear. Worldly peace is never with us for long, if at all, but the peace that Jesus offered is eternal. Hebrews 6:18-19, “So God has given both his promise and his oath. These two things are unchangeable because it is impossible for God to lie. Therefore, we who have fled to him for refuge can have great confidence as we hold to the hope that lies before us. This hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls. It leads us through the curtain into God’s inner sanctuary“. Back in John 14, the chapter starts with Jesus’ words, “Don’t let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me“. God has promised us that in Him we can find the peace that we need in our souls. But it requires faith to believe His promises. The terrible worriers amongst us will always be lacking peace, but that is really a display of a lack of faith. In John 14:2-3, Jesus followed His statement about not letting our hearts be troubled with, “There is more than enough room in my Father’s home. If this were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am“. Regardless of what this world throws at us, in God we have the source of peace, eternal peace. Jesus Himself. 

As pilgrims, we therefore walk by faith, not by sight, and we believe and apply the advice Paul wrote in Colossians 3:15, “And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts. For as members of one body you are called to live in peace. And always be thankful“. So when we start to become fearful through world events, we instead turn to the Source of peace, God Himself. He will never let us down. Psalm 46:1-3, “God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble. So we will not fear when earthquakes come and the mountains crumble into the sea. Let the oceans roar and foam. Let the mountains tremble as the waters surge!

When peace like a river” was a hymn written by Horatio Spafford after his four daughters were lost in a shipwreck. The words continue, “whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say, “It is well, it is well with my soul“”. That’s God’s peace in action. Could we have written that hymn? We must pray that we become so assured in Jesus and His peace, that we too can weather the storms of life. If God is our strong tower (Proverbs 18:10), then what do we have to fear? In God we can find the peace that our souls yearn for, forever.

Dear Heavenly Source of Peace. We praise You today, and pray for more faith and grace in our lives so that we can sing the hymn with conviction – “It is well with my soul”. Amen.

Wait Patiently

“Yet I am confident I will see the Lord’s goodness while I am here in the land of the living. Wait patiently for the Lord. Be brave and courageous. Yes, wait patiently for the Lord.”
Psalm 27:13-14 NLT

We will have a last look at Psalm 27 before we move on. In the last verse of this Psalm, David advised the singers and readers to “wait patiently”. God’s timing is not always as we would wish but it is always perfect, so David included with “patience” the necessity to “be brave and courageous”. There are many times in life when we believers have to be so. 

There is always a tendency to get ahead of the Lord. King Saul and his men were facing into a Philistine army of impressive proportions. Many of the Israelite soldiers were running away. We pick up the story in 1 Samuel 13:6-7, “The men of Israel saw what a tight spot they were in; and because they were hard pressed by the enemy, they tried to hide in caves, thickets, rocks, holes, and cisterns. Some of them crossed the Jordan River and escaped into the land of Gad and Gilead. Meanwhile, Saul stayed at Gilgal, and his men were trembling with fear“. Samuel was going to join Saul at Gilgal, to offer the usual sacrifices, but Saul failed to “wait patiently” and took it upon himself to sacrifice the burnt offering, a sin of huge implications because that was a priest’s responsibility. But, “Just as Saul was finishing with the burnt offering, Samuel arrived. Saul went out to meet and welcome him” (1 Samuel 13:10). Saul made loads of excuses for making the sacrifice instead of Samuel, but had to suffer the consequences of his impetuous behaviour, ““How foolish!” Samuel exclaimed. “You have not kept the command the Lord your God gave you. Had you kept it, the Lord would have established your kingdom over Israel forever. But now your kingdom must end, for the Lord has sought out a man after his own heart. The Lord has already appointed him to be the leader of his people, because you have not kept the Lord’s command”” (1 Samuel 13:13-14). 

In another Psalm, David wrote, “Be still in the presence of the Lord, and wait patiently for him to act. Don’t worry about evil people who prosper or fret about their wicked schemes” (Psalm 37:7). Certainly David had to wait many years between his anointing as king-elect and his coronation as King, a time involving a lot of patience, but also a need to be “brave and courageous”, as Saul attempted to have him killed. There is a poignant start to Psalm 40, which reads, “I waited patiently for the Lord to help me, and he turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the pit of despair, out of the mud and the mire. He set my feet on solid ground and steadied me as I walked along. He has given me a new song to sing, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see what he has done and be amazed. They will put their trust in the Lord”(Psalm 40:1-3). David certainly knew all about the virtue of being patient in his life. There was a time in David’s pre-king days when he was in the wilderness accompanied by a small army of men who had defected from a life under King Saul. He was living in a city called Ziklag but while he and his men were away, the Amalekites attacked his city and destroyed it, taking all of value away with them, including the women and children. But instead of rushing off after the raiders, we find that he waited even though the situation was difficult. 1 Samuel 30:6, “David was now in great danger because all his men were very bitter about losing their sons and daughters, and they began to talk of stoning him. But David found strength in the Lord his God“. Before he took any further action David asked the Lord about what he should do, and by waiting until he had a green light he succeeded in recovering all the wives, children and property that had been stolen. A fascinating story that started with a conversation between David and his Lord.

Patience is one of the examples of the fruit of the Spirit, as Paul wrote in Galatians 5:22-23, “But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!” Nine flavours of a fruit that grows within us as we journey through life. Patience develops in believers as they learn to trust the Lord in their daily lives. They don’t rush on impetuously, or respond without thinking, because they learn, often the hard way, to stop and think and wait. And that involves patience. The writer to the Hebrews followed the great chapter about faith with this, “Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us” (Hebrews 12:1). Other translations use the words perseverance and endurance instead of patience, all building a picture of waiting and seeking the Lord before making any significant decisions, no matter how big or small. James started his epistle with, “Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow“. We pilgrims believe in the Lord who supplies all that we need, when we need it. In life there are many adverse situations that develop around us, but we wait patiently for the Lord to act in them, obediently deciding against choosing a wrong path.

How do we learn the patience we need? Through prayer and power. Colossians 1:11, “We also pray that you will be strengthened with all his glorious power so you will have all the endurance and patience you need. …”. James wrote to the believers “scattered abroad”, “Dear brothers and sisters, be patient as you wait for the Lord’s return. Consider the farmers who patiently wait for the rains in the fall and in the spring. They eagerly look for the valuable harvest to ripen. You, too, must be patient. Take courage, for the coming of the Lord is near” (James 5:7-8). And that, in the end, is why we’re patient. In the context of eternity our natural lives are but a moment; surely we can learn patience just for such a brief time. Can’t we?

Dear Lord Jesus, we pray for more power and patience in our lives, as we look forward to Your return to this planet. There will be many situations to be patient though in our lives, but we know that You will help us in each one of them. Thank You. Amen.

Hope in God

“Show me the right path, O Lord; point out the road for me to follow. Lead me by your truth and teach me, for you are the God who saves me. All day long I put my hope in you.”
Psalm 25:4-5 NLT

A humble prayer from David, as he asks God to teach him, to lead him, and save him. He then finishes verse 5 with the statement “All day long I put my hope in you”. There is no better focus for our God, as I’m sure we agree, but human beings are notorious for hoping and trusting in other things and in other ways. But that hasn’t changed since the days of Adam. Psalm 20:7, “Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God”. “Hope” and “trust” go hand in hand in life. We hope in God for our future, and we trust Him to lead us in His ways.

But before we get ahead of ourselves, we must think about how worldly people understand hope. They use it in contexts such as, “I hope I don’t get Covid”, or “I hope it doesn’t rain on my birthday”. There is an element of doubt in such a definition of hope. A response to the question, “will you go to Heaven when you die” is “I hope so”, again demonstrating that they have doubts, though not strong enough to make them do anything about it. 

The whole concept of “hope” comes about because we cannot see what will happen in the future. That introduces another word – “faith”. Hebrew’s 11:1, “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see”. What do we pilgrims hope for? There will be many things, depending on our stages in life. We hope for the right job, house, partner, and so on. But one thing we all will agree on is our hope in God for our eternal home. And we can see the extraordinary experiences believers have gone through because within them was the hope of a better life ahead. Biblical hope is different from the hope that the world understands. Biblical hope carries with it a surety that what is hoped for, aligned as it is to God’s Word, is definitely going to happen. We might not see it taking place, but we have faith that whatever it is will come about. Jeremiah wrote, “For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future” (Jeremiah 29:11). That’s a great promise of God, and one we must believe for our lives and those of our loved ones. 

We pilgrims have a firm and unshakeable hope in the future, and we share it with those around us. 1 Peter 3:15, “But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect”. Do we have our answers ready? Are we a people who are living out God’s truth in our lives, so that others can see it? Are we beacons set on a hill, for all to be illuminated by, standing out from the crowd around us? On Easter Sunday this year I met a dog walker and the conversation came around to what she referred to as the terrible state of the world. She was scared about the wars and threats of war. Of the politicians and their messages of gloom. a poor woman with nowhere to turn to where she could find hope for her future and her family’s. But I shared about Jesus and his resurrection, that through Him we have hope for the future. She admitted that she was an atheist and hurried off, but hopefully I was able to plant a seed of hope. The Holy Spirit I’m sure will water and nurture the good seed of the Gospel planted in that lady’s life that day.

We pilgrims really need to understand the meaning of God’s “hope” and apply it to our lives. We mustn’t be like the house wife in Wales who prayed, when she went to bed, that the coal slag heap behind her house would be cast into the sea, hoping that God would answer her prayer with a much better view when she woke up. On opening her curtains the next morning, the slag heap was still there, her hopes dashed. Her comment was that she knew that her prayer wouldn’t work anyway. When we hope for something we must have faith that the God of hope will answer our prayer.

Paul wrote, “ … We, too, wait with eager hope for the day when God will give us our full rights as his adopted children, including the new bodies he has promised us. We were given this hope when we were saved. (If we already have something, we don’t need to hope for it. But if we look forward to something we don’t yet have, we must wait patiently and confidently.)” (Romans 8:23b-25). We hope and we wait in faith for our hope to be realised.

Father God, in difficult times it is easy to lose hope and faith in You. Father, we admit that we have lost sight of You. In this prayer for hope, Lord, we ask that Your Holy Spirit reignites within us the hope and faith in You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Strength Renewed

“The Lord is my shepherd; I have all that I need. He lets me rest in green meadows; he leads me beside peaceful streams. He renews my strength. He guides me along right paths, bringing honour to his name. Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me. Your rod and your staff protect and comfort me.”
Psalm 23:1-4 NLT

With our picture building of “green meadows”, “peaceful streams” and times of “rest” it is inevitable, or so we think, that our strength would be renewed. After a hard day’s work, a good meal and an evening on the sofa followed by a good night’s sleep, we will be equipped for the next day with all the strength we need. But that’s the physical strength that is necessary for our work-a-day lives. When we consider our spiritual strength we are in a different league, one that needs a different approach, and one that cannot be achieved without God. 

Consider the spiritual “green meadows” and “peaceful streams”. They are places where we can satisfy our spiritual hunger and thirst, but finding them is impossible for those who don’t believe in Jesus. We have said before that counterfeit solutions are sought after, in the hope that a worldly solution exists to renew an unbeliever’s spiritual needs (they definitely have them, by the way). Just because someone says he or she doesn’t believe in God doesn’t remove the need to find a remedy to the internal craving in their souls. Just yesterday, I shared the Gospel with a neighbour who subsequently became quite agitated and defensive. I suspect that I wasn’t the first to talk about God in his presence but he explained that he wasn’t “religious” and that he tried to be a good and kind person, worthy of respect. Of course he was, but that won’t feed and satisfy his soul. I pray for another opportunity to introduce him to God, the only One who can satisfy his spirit’s needs.

We pilgrims know where we can find the “green meadows” and “peaceful streams”. We find a quiet place somewhere and open God’s Word if we can, or remember a particular verse if we don’t have our Bibles with us. It could be a park bench, or a corner of our bedrooms. Our office desk or on a walk somewhere. I can remember the rich times I spent with God feeding my spirit as I walked around the Union Canal in Edinburgh during my lunch breaks. I was going through a stressful time at work and I needed to “renew my strength” before facing the second half of the day. It was truly amazing how God spoke to me and encouraged me through God-incidents and encounters on those walks. I am eternally grateful.

Isaiah wrote, “Have you never heard? Have you never understood? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of all the earth. He never grows weak or weary. No one can measure the depths of his understanding” (Isaiah 40:28). We worship a God who is limitless, who has all the resources we need, and who is always looking for an opportunity to bless His people. But we have to put ourselves into a receiving mode. For most of our waking hours we are filling our lives with noise, not just of the audible variety, but also with our busyness, with our activities and distractions. Hence the need to find a quiet place, where we can get away from all our worldly cares and anxieties. Isaiah knew the limitlessness of God. He knew about God’s constant presence and he went on to write, “He gives power to the weak and strength to the powerless. Even youths will become weak and tired, and young men will fall in exhaustion. But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint” (Isaiah 40:29-31). What an amazing picture of God’s bountiful provision. It doesn’t matter if we feel “weak” and “powerless” because God has, and is, all the strength that we need. It’s not a physical thing, with muscles strong and functioning. It is all about our spiritual resilience in a world that despises anything to do with God. 

Yesterday I had a walk in a local park, where the weekly “Parkrun” was taking place. Runners displaying a cacophony of colours, with different forms of attire. Lycra very much in evidence. People of all ages and shapes pounding their ways around a circuit marked out with different coloured cones. I was amused to even see a man with a toddler in a running buggy (one with extra large wheels) puffing and panting, pushing his way around the course. What the toddler thought I don’t know. The runners’ dedication to their event was commendable. They would have eventually returned home, full of self-satisfaction no doubt, but the hunger and thirst in their souls would have still been there. I remarked to one of the stewards that physical exercise was good, but all these sweating bodies would one day lie “mouldering in the grave”, their souls that will live forever sorely neglected. 

We pilgrims “trust in the Lord” don’t we? David did and he wrote this wonderful Psalm from his own experiences. Pastures and streams for his body and his soul. He knew them all. He fed his soul in places of rest, as he worshiped and meditated in God. There he renewed his strength, just as Isaiah wrote. And so can we pilgrims. If we find that we don’t have time in the morning to spend it with God, then we must get up a bit earlier. But find the time we must, because our spirits are refreshed and our “strength renewed” only when we sit in God’s presence.

Dear Lord Jesus. Only You are the Way to Heaven. Only You have the word of eternal life. Only You can refresh our souls. Thanks You. Amen.

From the Womb

“Yet you brought me out of the womb; you made me trust in you, even at my mother’s breast. From birth I was cast on you; from my mother’s womb you have been my God.”
Psalm 22:9-10 NIVUK

David made the confident assertion that his relationship with God started when he was born. In fact, he stated that he was “cast on [God]” at that nascent point in his life. A new life, full of potential, and with God’s hand upon him, how could he ever fail? And writing here David is much older and wiser, but testifying to his start in life. God was there at his birth and while being fed by his mother, and God was still with David much later as Psalm 22 rolled off his pen. 

Was David being singled out for special treatment by God? Did God know that He would have to be proactive in David’s upbringing, ensuring that he would be the right person for Israel’s king? When a child is brought into the world, the potential for a great man or woman of God is there, but not many will achieve the lofty heights of kingship. So, how is that potential realised during a child’s upbringing? In David’s culture, much of that was down to the mother, who nurtured the child, sung songs of praise and worship, prayed, told the Bible stories, and taught the child in the ways of God. The Jewish father also led the family in prayers and teaching, reminiscing over meals about the great acts of God in their heritage, the Passover, the crossing of the Red Sea and so on. A Jewish boy’s education would also have been steeped in the Hebrew Bible of that time. In David’s case he progressed from childhood into manhood but he took with him all that he had been taught, and, most importantly, he started to work in his father’s business, tending sheep for long hours and in the process he developed the skills necessary for life as well as honing his relationship with God. And he wrote Psalm 8:1-2, “O Lord, our Lord, your majestic name fills the earth! Your glory is higher than the heavens. You have taught children and infants to tell of your strength, silencing your enemies and all who oppose you“. In those long nights he looked up and saw the canopy of the heavens in all its glory, and he wrote, “The heavens proclaim the glory of God. The skies display his craftsmanship. Day after day they continue to speak; night after night they make him known”(Psalm 19:1-2). But it all started as a new born baby in his mother’s arms, with God looking on.

There are other examples of God raising up a man for a particular purpose, and Moses comes to mind. But there was a special Man born two thousand or so years ago who was the Son of God. His mission has changed the course of history, and is still doing so as the End Times loom ever nearer. On that day, Heaven touched earth in the arms of a peasant teenager called Mary, bringing a Life that climaxed thirty three years later on a cross at Calvary, birthing something else that we call the Church. But that’s for another day.

The birth of David would not have appeared in his memory of course, but his parents would have reminded him about his Godly origins. It stresses the important role that a parent has in bringing up children. Those early years of nurture and teaching will make or break a child’s future, because what is sown in the first few years will set the course of their lives ahead. It is so sad that parents will often abdicate their responsibilities and sit the child before a television, potentially filling their minds with all the wrong information. And our schools, colleges, and politicians today seem more intent on propagating ideologies that are just plain wrong. We pray for our country, that God will once again visit us bringing conviction of sin and salvation. We need You, God! Our politicians need You. Our teachers need You. We all need You. Come Lord Jesus!

God does not prefer one person over another, as Paul reminded us in Romans 2:11, “For God does not show favouritism“. We are all equal before God and, most importantly, before the Cross. But people will have different abilities, as Jesus taught in the Parable of the Talents. We can read it in Matthew 25, but here is verse 15, “He gave five bags of silver to one, two bags of silver to another, and one bag of silver to the last—dividing it in proportion to their abilities. He then left on his trip“. Notice the phrase “in proportion to their abilities”. God doesn’t expect more from us than we are able to give. The first two servants, even though they had different abilities, heard their Master say, “well done, my good and faithful servant”. But we need to use what God has given us to the best of our ability, being aware of the ultimate fate of the third servant. 

Many people will try one day to blame their upbringing for their status in life. Although there is some truth in that, we have a wonderful God who is able to redeem our past, and restore the years the locust has eaten. We may experience many fruitless years in this life, but God is patient and knows our hearts. One day He will bring us through to His presence. But in the meantime, we listen for God’s voice and we obey His instructions. We are on Planet Earth for the just the time as this. There is an opportunity to reach our generation for Jesus, using the gifts the Holy Spirit planted within us from our mothers’ wombs. We may never see the fruit of our labours this side of eternity, but I think we may be surprised when we find souls coming to us one day thanking us for our perseverance and willingness to share our faith. We trust God with our future, as David did. And with him we proclaim that he is our God. Forever.

Dear Father God. We trust You with our lives, and one day we pray in faith that we too will hear those words “well done” from the Master Himself. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Cries for Help

“They called for help, but no one came to their rescue. They even cried to the Lord, but he refused to answer. I ground them as fine as dust in the wind. I swept them into the gutter like dirt.”
Psalm 18:41-42 NLT

Gruesome language from David in our verses for today. Not words that apply literally though; instead an allegorical representation of what David would perhaps have liked to do to his enemies. David was showing his disdain for his enemies when he wrote about grinding “them as fine as dust”, because dust is considered useless and of no consequence, a nuisance to be discarded. But what David felt about his enemies was not in itself a problem to them. After all, what people we don’t know think of us is not really of any consequence. What matters is having a relationship with people, such as our friends and family, that contains mutual love and respect. 

We turn to God and wonder what He thinks of His enemies, all those people who deny that He exists, or refuse to obey His commands. Does He consider them as “dust” in a world full of people numbered ” … like the stars in the sky and the sand on the seashore …” (Genesis 22:17)? In the brief life spans of human beings they have an opportunity to make choices about their relationship with their Creator God. But afterwards they may indeed become like “dust … swept … into the gutter like dirt”. There will come a time when God’s enemies will be in a place where they effectively don’t exist anymore. Like dust, they will be useless and will have lost the opportunity to spend eternity in a wonderful place called Heaven. Instead they will find themselves in a terrible place, regretting forever their wrong choices, hence the weeping, wailing and gnashing of teeth (Matthew 13:42). They are dust, unloved, unnoticed and ignored.

In our societies, people without a relationship with God will nevertheless have a faint but tangible impression that there is a “higher power” somewhere, overlooking our planet. These people, however, will have rejected a personal and loving relationship with Him, putting themselves in the focus of Jesus’ words in Matthew 7:23, “But I will reply, ‘I never knew you. Get away from me, you who break God’s laws’”. But notwithstanding this, such people, in a time of crisis, will call out to God for salvation from whatever they are facing. And they find that, as David recorded, “He refused to answer”. Why should God answer the prayers and cries for help from people He doesn’t know?  David had a great relationship with the Lord, and He had many testimonies of answered prayer, such as earlier in Psalm 18:3, “I called on the Lord, who is worthy of praise, and he saved me from my enemies”. But David noted that when his enemies called upon the Lord, He refused to answer. 

God always answers prayers, including cries for help, if we pilgrims are patient enough and sensitive enough to hear God’s voice. God’s answers fall into three categories – “Yes”, “No”, and “Maybe” or “Not Yet”. How long it will be before His answers to our prayers and cries for help come about is up to our faith. Jesus said, “I tell you, you can pray for anything, and if you believe that you’ve received it, it will be yours” (Mark 11:24). Matthew 21:22 adds the word “faith”, “You can pray for anything, and if you have faith, you will receive it”. We understand, of course, that our prayers must align with God’s will if we are looking for a positive answer.

In John 9 we can read the account of the occasion when Jesus healed a blind man. In the ensuing, rather scathing and hostile conversation with the Pharisees, the blind man said, “We know that God doesn’t listen to sinners, but he is ready to hear those who worship him and do his will” (John 9:31). That verse showed an insight into God’s ways that applies to all who call upon His name for salvation. David’s enemies cried out to the Lord for help but “He refused to answer” because God didn’t know them – they were sinners. 

The Bible is full of references to the conditions necessary for God to hear us. Proverbs 15:29, “The Lord is far from the wicked, but he hears the prayers of the righteous“. 1 Peter 3:12, “The eyes of the Lord watch over those who do right, and his ears are open to their prayers. But the Lord turns his face against those who do evil”. And a few words from the old Apostle John, “I have written this to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know you have eternal life. And we are confident that he hears us whenever we ask for anything that pleases him. And since we know he hears us when we make our requests, we also know that he will give us what we ask for” (1 John 5:13-15). 

Dear Father God. We know that You listen to our prayers and always give us an answer. We understand that what we hear may not align with our human thoughts, but we trust You in knowing what is best for us. Please increase our faith, we pray. Amen.
