Queen Elizabeth II

So David reigned over all Israel and did what was just and right for all his people.
2 Samuel‬ ‭8:15‬ ‭NLT

We must interrupt our journey through Revelation to pause and reflect upon the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. She served this country, the UK, the British Isles, and the countries that form the Commonwealth, for most of her adult life, and was even performing an official duty two days before she died. The right of a monarch to govern in the UK was removed long ago – it was replaced with a democratic parliamentary system that is very much to the fore in our Western society. But even the most fanatical of wannabe republicans in our lands have to agree that Elizabeth was a remarkable woman.

Although the monarch in the UK does not have a direct say in the day to day running and administration of the country, our Queen performed a much more subtle task – she led this country by example. She had a stable marriage, lasting 73 years before Philip died. Although her four children had some very public problems, and still do, her motherhood and leadership were there to the fore. She set very high standards and lived up to them herself.

But for me, two of Elizabeth’s most remarkable achievements are worthy of note. In matters politic, she managed to remain neutral, and politicians of all colours held a very great respect for her. They even consulted her on occasion, soliciting her opinion on matters of state and valuing her common sense and wisdom. Secondly, her faith in God was strong and immovable. It was a quiet but steady personal relationship with God that sustained her through many a difficult time. Our verse today refers to Israel’s greatest king, David. He did what was “just and right for all his people”. And Elizabeth did the same for hers.

What legacy has Elizabeth left us? We each will have our own thoughts I’m sure. For me it is the inspiration of her strong faith and how it shaped and sustained her life. And how that example shaped the lives of people, young and old, in this country.

We must ask too, what legacy we will leave our own circle of friends and family, not only when we have moved on to a new life, but in the here and now. Throughout her life, Elizabeth shaped and inspired, encouraged and advised, all those she had contact with. A combination of her own inner resources and the spiritual support from her faith in God became a beacon of strength and an example for others to follow. So in our day to day lives are we too being people others look up to? And when we pass from this life, will the epitaph on our tombstones include the words “just and right”? Hmmm…

The Second Flying Angel

“Then another angel followed him through the sky, shouting, “Babylon is fallen—that great city is fallen—because she made all the nations of the world drink the wine of her passionate immorality.””
Revelation‬ ‭14:8‬ ‭NLT

The Apostle John’s vision is certainly full of action. The first of the three flying angels is still in his memory, as he mulls over the implications of the global declaration of the Gospel. Perhaps the first angel is still visible, just on the horizon. But he now sees another one coming towards him, shouting a very different message. A message about the fall of Babylon.

Babylon was the capital city of successive empires that flourished many years before the birth of Christ. And today its ruins are located quite close to Baghdad, in Iraq. It was probably the largest city in the ancient world and had enormous significance in the lives of the Jews because so many of them were attacked and killed, and many of their people exiled, by Babylonian oppression. There are several passages in the Old Testament that detail the evil intent of the Babylonians. In Jeremiah’s day, the Babylonians were besieging Jerusalem, and we read about a request made to the prophet in Jeremiah 21:2, “Please speak to the Lord for us and ask him to help us. King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon is attacking Judah. Perhaps the Lord will be gracious and do a mighty miracle as he has done in the past. Perhaps he will force Nebuchadnezzar to withdraw his armies.” Daniel, a young Jewish man, was exiled to Babylon, and what happened to him and his colleagues there can be read in the Book of Daniel in the Old Testament. His story starts in Daniel 1:1, “During the third year of King Jehoiakim’s reign in Judah, King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon came to Jerusalem and besieged it.” And continues with Daniel’s exile, recorded in Daniel 1:3, “Then the king ordered Ashpenaz, his chief of staff, to bring to the palace some of the young men of Judah’s royal family and other noble families, who had been brought to Babylon as captives.” And there are many further accounts in the Bible about Babylon and its role in Jewish history. Babylon became a symbol of evil and oppression, immorality and idol worship, cruelty and a place where you just didn’t want to be.

So in John’s vision what was the implication of the angel’s message, “Babylon is fallen” and what was “her passionate immorality”? To the Jews, the oppression and cruelty of the Babylonians made them a feared and evil enemy. The word “Babylon” came to mean wicked, debauched, evil, hated. In fact, every negative descriptive phrase all bundled up in just one word. Psalm 137:8 encapsulates what the Jews dreamt of concerning Babylon. “O Babylon, you will be destroyed. Happy is the one who pays you back for what you have done to us“. I’m sure this is the sanitised version of what the psalmist really thought!

Babylon became associated with sinful sexual acts, prostitution, idol worship and other immoral content too graphic to be shared here. And in Revelation, John wrote that “all the nations of the world” came to be the immoral legacy of the Babylonians. Here in the End Times, Babylon and its influence is finally dealt with and destroyed. No prizes for guessing who was really behind Babylon, its culture, its society, its influences, and its peoples.

We pilgrims can only look on with sadness and concern, that so many generations of people in the earth’s nations were taken in by the Babylonian immoral and evil spiritual influences. Not for us that sinful life, but we must be careful because the lusts of our sinful nature could quickly cause us to be sucked into a Babylonian lifestyle. Our twisted logic could be something like, “Just once won’t hurt”. Or “I’m only researching for my essay”. And before we know it we are fully paid up members of the Babylonians. Our enemy, the devil, knows where we are weakest and he will pick away at our resolve unless we stand firm against him.

We have all the tools we need to stand firm against the devil’s ploys. Ephesians 6:13 says, “Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armour so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm“. And the remaining verses in Ephesians 6 break down the weapons we have at our disposal. We have the belt of truth and the breastplate of righteousness. We have Gospel shoes and a shield of faith. A helmet of salvation and an offensive weapon, the sword of the Word of God.

We pilgrims are called to a life of purity. It isn’t easy. In fact it is very hard. The Apostle Paul knew that, and he appealed to the Ephesians to “throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception. Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy. (Ephesians 4:22-24). But if we stumble and fall, there is a remedy. 1 John 1:9 reads, “But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness“.

The second angel announces the demise of the Jews’ arch-enemy Babylon and its associated immorality. Most of the world would have been stricken with regret, their lifestyles overturned. The party over. But is that a cheer I can hear from that synagogue over there?

Dear Father. Thank You that through the gloom of the End Times comes a ray of light, as the wickedness in the world is finally dealt with. Please help us to stay strong in the face of temptation. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

The First Flying Angel

“And I saw another angel flying through the sky, carrying the eternal Good News to proclaim to the people who belong to this world—to every nation, tribe, language, and people. “Fear God,” he shouted. “Give glory to him. For the time has come when he will sit as judge. Worship him who made the heavens, the earth, the sea, and all the springs of water.””
Revelation 14:6-7 NLT

Just as John is gripped by the wonder of the Heavenly choir and the 144,000 God-followers on earth with Jesus, singing the new song, his vision is distracted by the first of three flying angels. This one has a proclamation, and he wastes no time in making sure that all the inhabitants of the earth hear what he has to say. Don’t forget that the people living on earth include all who are marked with the 666 reference, on their hands or foreheads. In spite of all the problems and natural disasters, they still haven’t repented and turned to God. The angel’s proclamation is the Gospel, the Good News about Jesus and His Kingdom. He shouts the message out. The people must “Fear God“. They must acknowledge His presence and truth. They must worship Him, the Creator God, and, ominously, the angel warns the world that it’s judgement time. Our gracious God, even in the eleventh hour, still gives time for mankind to repent.

Imagine the scene. You are going about your daily business. But something in the sky grabs your attention. You look up, rub your eyes to make sure, and watch in amazement as an angel flies overhead, shouting out his message. You hear it in your native language. But the Asian family down the road hear it in their language as well. Simultaneously. In fact, regardless of what language is spoken, everyone will hear the message, loud and clear. No-one will have an excuse when they come to stand before God, to say they didn’t hear the Gospel, or understand the language of the angel. They won’t even be able to claim that the accent was indecipherable. How big will the angel be? Rest assured – he will be large enough for you to see him well. You won’t miss him, trust me!

In many ways this is a catch all. Up until now, God’s holy people, Christians everywhere, have gone to great lengths to share their faith, their messages of hope, the Gospel message of the Good News. Look at the extraordinary effort that has been put into translating the Bible. According to Wikipedia, as of September 2020, the full Bible has been translated into 704 languages, with the New Testament into a further 1551, and other portions bringing the total up to 3,415 languages. Over the centuries, missionaries have criss-crossed the globe with the Gospel message. But just in case an obscure people somewhere has failed to hear the message, or the people need a reminder, the first of the three angels will make sure they hear it.

But we know that God wants everyone to repent and turn to Him. The Apostle Peter recorded in his epistle 2 Peter 3:9, “The Lord isn’t really being slow about his promise, as some people think. No, he is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to be destroyed, but wants everyone to repent“. But we have a choice. God isn’t going to twist anyone’s arm. We can choose the broad way that leads to destruction or the narrow way that leads to eternal life.

If anyone is reading this blog today, and they haven’t yet made a decision for Christ, I invite you, even plead with you, to make the right choice right now. Before you forget. Don’t put it off. We don’t know when the day of Judgement will arrive, but it will be too late if you leave the decision until then. Remember, the default choice is the wrong choice. The Judgement Day will be a terrible time. A time when the enormity of having made the wrong decision suddenly hits home, as you are directed towards the door which opens into a place where you don’t want to go. And there’s no way back. God has said so.

Heavenly Father. We thank You for Your gracious patience. We pray for our families and friends, that our messages of hope will bear fruit and they will join us one day in Your presence. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

A Heavenly New Song

Then I saw the Lamb standing on Mount Zion, and with him were 144,000 who had his name and his Father’s name written on their foreheads. And I heard a sound from heaven like the roar of mighty ocean waves or the rolling of loud thunder. It was like the sound of many harpists playing together. This great choir sang a wonderful new song in front of the throne of God and before the four living beings and the twenty-four elders. No one could learn this song except the 144,000 who had been redeemed from the earth. They have kept themselves as pure as virgins, following the Lamb wherever he goes. They have been purchased from among the people on the earth as a special offering to God and to the Lamb. They have told no lies; they are without blame.”
Revelation 14:1-5 NLT

The 144,000 learnt a new song. Only they had the right to sing it, and their praise and worship through the song triggered an outpouring of singing with a “sound … like the roar of mighty ocean waves or the rolling of loud thunder” in HeavenJohn struggled in his vision to described what the worship sounded like. He recorded it was like the natural sounds of waves and thunder, but with a musical content as though many harpists were playing their instruments in a wonderful expression of how they felt about their Creator God. John knew it was a great Heavenly choir singing, and they were in a vast arena that stretched into the distance, apparently for ever. The focus of the arena was the throne of God, and, still with Him, were the four living beings and the twenty four elders. Wow!

Occasionally some churches experience an outpouring of spiritual worship as the congregation abandon the hymn book and instead spontaneously erupt in a new song, expressing their praise and worship of God. The Psalmists often encouraged the people to sing a new song. For example we read in Psalm 149:1, “Praise the Lord! Sing to the Lord a new song. Sing his praises in the assembly of the faithful.” We read in Isaiah 42:10, “Sing a new song to the Lord! Sing his praises from the ends of the earth! Sing, all you who sail the seas, all you who live in distant coastlands.” And in our recent journey through Revelation, we read in 5:9, “And they sang a new song with these words: “You are worthy to take the scroll and break its seals and open it. For you were slaughtered, and your blood has ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation.”

So we have the picture from John’s vision of the vast Heavenly choir singing the new song, and the 144,000 Jewish believers on Planet Earth in Jerusalem joining in. Truly a time when Heaven touches earth.

We pilgrims are encouraged to sing a new song too. But how do we create or compose a new song. We don’t, of course, have to sit down with a music manuscript and start to add the crotchets and minims, writing some lyrics as we go along, though some may want to do so. A new song is an expression of our praise and worship to our wonderful Heavenly Father and His Son Jesus. And helping us with our spiritual expression is the Holy Spirit, connecting us to the Heavenly realm. So how do we start, if singing a new song is foreign to us? We start with a prayer of adoration. Then we allow our thoughts and spirits to focus on what Jesus has done for us. Next we start to express, with a few worship words, or the Heavenly language God has given us, how we feel inside. And then sing them, choosing a note or notes that wells up within us. No straining, just Jesus.

Earthbound we might be just now, but we can join in, as our spirits touch Heaven in a song of praise and worship to God. Our spirits are in fact reaching out to join the Heavenly choir. But we sadly restrain them with our attention to our work-a-day life. Held back by the trials encountered on our journeys through life. So we must allocate time for a new song to burst from our spirits. Perhaps on the daily commute to the office. Or in our time spent in His presence at the start of our days. And in the process of singing our new songs, the resources of Heaven, in some mysterious way, flood over our souls, bringing sustenance for the day ahead. Why do we so often fill our stomachs with earthly food but starve our spirits of Heavenly fare?

So today we pilgrims join the heavenly choir in a new song of praise to our God. Just by allowing our spirits to respond to our Heavenly Father, as flowers turn towards to sun as it rises from the dawn.

Heavenly Father, we worship You today. And tomorrow. And for ever. Amen.

The 144,000

In parallel with the global events under the control of the beasts, John’s vision panned across to Jerusalem, the location of Mount Zion. Jesus was standing there, and there were a lot of His people with Him. 144,000 in fact. They had the name of the Lamb of God and His Father written on their foreheads. Back in Revelation 7:4 we read, “And I heard how many were marked with the seal of God—144,000 were sealed from all the tribes of Israel.” We now also now know what the mark, the “seal of God” was, though it wasn’t clear in Revelation 7. So this event involving Jesus and Mount Zion must be confirming His second coming. Now we know that Jesus ascended into Heaven from the Mount of Olives from Acts 1:12, where Luke recorded, “Then the apostles returned to Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives, a distance of half a mile“. And the angels present at that event, as the disciples were straining to see Jesus’ ascent through the clouds, said, ““Men of Galilee,” they said, “why are you standing here staring into heaven? Jesus has been taken from you into heaven, but someday he will return from heaven in the same way you saw him go!” So here we are, blessed and encouraged, because Jesus has done exactly what He said He would do – return to earth a second time.

It is interesting that the 144,00 Jewish believers were present as the End Time Tribulation was unfolding (just before the seventh seal was broken in Revelation 7). And in spite of the devil’s best efforts, with all his mayhem setting up the Antichrist and an evil world governmental system and religion, the 144,000 were still there. The devil failed in his attempts to eliminate them. How encouraging is that? They showed that it is possible to stand firm to the end. Also, the Jewish believers must have been followers of Jesus, because they were standing there in Jerusalem with Him. Isaiah prophesied that Jesus will rule and reign from Mount Zion. We read, “Then the glory of the moon will wane, and the brightness of the sun will fade, for the Lord of Heaven’s Armies will rule on Mount Zion. He will rule in great glory in Jerusalem, in the sight of all the leaders of his people“. (Isaiah 24:23).

Do we pilgrims, not counted amongst the 144,000, feel a bit insecure? The Bible version we have used today, the NLT, records that these Jews were “purchased from among the people on the earth”. Other versions describe them as being the “first-fruits”. But whatever they were, these were God’s holy people with a special mission. Their purity was faultless, they were unstinting followers of Jesus, they had never told lies, and the verses today record them as being a “special offering to God and to the Lamb“. But as for us Gentile believers, where do we stand in the End Times vision? Perhaps we will be counted in the number in Revelation 7:9, “After this I saw a vast crowd, too great to count, from every nation and tribe and people and language, standing in front of the throne and before the Lamb. They were clothed in white robes and held palm branches in their hands.” But whatever happens, those who stand firm to the end will one day be with our loving Heavenly Father, and His Son Jesus, in Heaven. Jesus’s said to the repentant thief on the cross next to him, “… I assure you, today you will be with me in paradise.” (‭‭Luke‬ ‭23:43). God will never reject a truly repentant sinner from entering His presence.

Father God. We bow before Your throne this morning with deeply grateful hearts. Only You have the words of eternal life. Only You hold the keys to eternity. We worship You today. Amen.

Number 666

“And with all the miracles he was allowed to perform on behalf of the first beast, he deceived all the people who belong to this world. He ordered the people to make a great statue of the first beast, who was fatally wounded and then came back to life. He was then permitted to give life to this statue so that it could speak. Then the statue of the beast commanded that anyone refusing to worship it must die. He required everyone—small and great, rich and poor, free and slave—to be given a mark on the right hand or on the forehead. And no one could buy or sell anything without that mark, which was either the name of the beast or the number representing his name. Wisdom is needed here. Let the one with understanding solve the meaning of the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man. His number is 666.”
Revelation‬ ‭13:14-18‬ ‭NLT

In John’s vision he saw a horrifying attack on the liberty of mankind. Everyone had to be registered. There were no exceptions. Of course, in the UK, registration, in one form or another, is already in place. We have National Insurance numbers. NHS references. Entries on the Voter’s Roll. My banking is defined by a sort code and account number. My driving Licence has its own unique number. We have passports. A young person sometimes has to have an ID card detailing their age, so that certain age-limited purchases can be made, or entry allowed into some premises. In many respects, personal identification details are essential in UK, and other Western, societies so that the lives we lead can be as smooth as possible. But what the devil had in mind was much more insidious than this. The identification mark was to be visible to all. And this mark was necessary to allow life to be lived the devil’s way. Without the ID, “no one could buy or sell anything”. But how could personal freedom deteriorate to become like this? And why would the “beast” require such a universal action?

First of all we already have the technology to give people a “mark” or ID. Think of bar codes, QR codes or the semiconductor chips contained within bank cards. Dogs in the UK are legally required to have a “chip” inserted in the loose skin around their necks. A few years ago, a media report disclosed that thousands of Swedes were having microchips inserted under their skin, to make life easier when faced with login requirements. So technology is not the problem. The world today has reached the stage where ID requirements have become ubiquitous.

So as populations increasingly become familiar with presenting their ID, perhaps a universal and unique code, visible to all, sounds like a good idea. No more fragmented login requirements. And if a universal login is used for good, I don’t think anyone would complain – it would make their lives easier. But what the devil is up to is more insidious. Once he has the world population marked in this way, he will be able to exert total control over them. And that is really the problem – God created mankind to be able to think for itself, but our enemy the devil wants to control us, thoughts and all. And those who refuse to be “marked” will be effectively outcasts and unable to function within society.

I believe the mark the devil wants to apply will ultimately be capable of being remotely monitored and controlled. Where God created human beings with the ability to make their own choices, the devil’s world wants automatons. John’s vision described a scary world. If the population behaved in a way that suited the devil, the people would be able to live their lives without too much hassle. But the lack of individual freedoms would increase as the rules governing and controlling the population start to be ratcheted up. If we allow our thoughts to extrapolate what technology might be able to achieve, think of how the devil could control and even prevent what he disapproves of, such as going to church. Or something else that doesn’t fit within the devil’s world view.

These verses today from Revelation 13 end with a reference to the number “666”. What is all that about? Over the millennia there have been numerous attempts to decode what this means but no definitive solution has been found. So I’m not going to add my tuppence worth to the debate. Suffice to say, that the number refers to something we don’t yet understand, something in the future, technology or a process. However, with the scientific advances being made, the required technology is probably not far away over the horizon of human understanding.

So we pilgrims plod on through life. Grateful for the revelation and support of the Bible and the warnings of what is to come from John’s vision. Forewarned is forearmed. We know what the devil is up to, so we pray. And keep on praying. For our countries, our political leaders, our communities and families, and finally, for ourselves, that we will stand firm through all these troubles, affirming our faith. God is our loving Heavenly Father and He will lead and guide us through the devil’s schemes. The Apostle Paul helpfully set out some practical ways in which we can live in a devil-influenced world. In Ephesians 6:11 we read, “Put on all of God’s armour so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil“. God’s armour indeed has the capability of preventing the devil from overwhelming us. And Paul finished his armour verses with Ephesians 6:18, “Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere“. So that is what we pilgrims will do.

Dear God. I thank You for John’s faithfulness in recording his vision. I pray for us all, that we will stand firm in the face of the devil’s attacks, looking to the One who defeated the devil at Calvary. Amen.

A Beastly Image

The second beast, which we are assuming is the devil himself, is performing miracles. But let’s pause for a minute. Firstly, the devil is not omnipresent. He can only be in one place at a time. Only God is omnipresent. Secondly, we can be assured that he is not a figure with a tail and horns, wearing a red suit and carrying a pitchfork, as is the case in popular imagery. He will probably manifest himself as a charismatic, plausible and acceptable man who has captivated people by what he says and what he does to support his words. Global travel capabilities and media exposure will be sufficient to ensure that all on earth know about him. Note that we assume that the devil is male, because that is what the Scriptures imply, but we don’t know for sure what gender he is, if one at all. Some people think that angels are genderless, at least in the way we humans understand gender.

But back to the devil’s deceptive miracles. These will be sufficiently spectacular to convince people of his assumed authenticity, but they will be a hollow counterfeit of the Godly miracles we know our wonderful Creator God can perform. In John’s vision the devil’s fame and influence continue to grow until he manages to convince “the people” to make a statue. Who are these people? And what will this statue look like?

The people who make up society fall into several socio-political groups. There are those on the extremes of opinion, promoting their more radical ideologies. Lobby groups emerge from time to time, and vociferously try and change the ways society thinks. This spawns the emergence of groups who just as vocally oppose them. All within the law of course. But the majority of people may have an opinion but are not that bothered and want to get on with their lives unfettered by such extremism. These radical groups, however, are not all bad and can change society. As an example, think of the way slavery was abolished in the 19th Century. Individuals such as William Wilberforce and his supporters lobbied hard to get rid of slavery and finally succeeded. However, we can be assured that the global population, in the main, will be taken in by the devil’s lies, as they work out through the influences of the beasts. The “father of lies” will not be interested in good ideologies.

John’s vision continues. The devil “ordered the people to make a great statue” so that there was a focal point for global worship. By this time he would have brought about a radical change in the way people think. There will perhaps be the vociferous minority doing the statue building and the rest of the people going with the flow. But what will the statue look like? In John’s vision we are told that the devil brought it to life and enabled it to speak. To have any relevance for worship, the statue probably has to be humanoid. In our Western societies, such a statue would not have much impact, but think about totalitarian regimes such as North Korea, China, Russia and so on, where worship of the leaders is commonplace. In some countries, the totalitarian leaders are even deified, and emperor worship is not an unknown phenomenon. So we can expect the global leader to be much the same, though with one significant twist – his effigy will be granted life and the ability to speak by the devil’s trickery. This would have been miraculous in the Apostle John’s times, but in today’s technological world, such an animated object is not far away from reality. Think about holograms, for example.

The people are now put in a very difficult position. They are required to worship this idolatrous, animated image of the beast. And if they don’t then they will be murdered. This will be a particularly hard time for Christians, God’s holy people. I’m reminded of the Jewish exiles, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, in the story recorded in Daniel 3. The king at that time, Nebuchadnezzar, had a statue erected and the population were ordered to worship this idol when music was played by the live bands at the time. But the three Jewish men refused. Some astrologers decided to make mischief and saw an opportunity to eliminate God’s influence in their society, as exemplified by the Jews. So they informed Nebuchadnezzar about the Jewish refusal to worship the statue. Their response to an angry king was classic. Nebuchadnezzar said, as we read in Daniel 3:15-18, “I will give you one more chance to bow down and worship the statue I have made when you hear the sound of the musical instruments. But if you refuse, you will be thrown immediately into the blazing furnace. And then what god will be able to rescue you from my power?” Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego replied, “O Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you. If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God whom we serve is able to save us. He will rescue us from your power, Your Majesty. But even if he doesn’t, we want to make it clear to you, Your Majesty, that we will never serve your gods or worship the gold statue you have set up.” We see from the rest of the story that God saved them from death in the furnace. In these last days, God’s holy people, if and when faced with having to worship the image of the beast, will have to make similar decisions.

As Christian pilgrims, we must be prepared. There are times coming, in fact, in some respects, they are already here, when Christians, God’s holy people, will be increasingly marginalised. We can learn from the story of Noah and his faith. He built an ark on dry land – imagine the ridicule? But he had been warned about what was to come. In Hebrews 11:7 we read, “It was by faith that Noah built a large boat to save his family from the flood. He obeyed God, who warned him about things that had never happened before. By his faith Noah condemned the rest of the world, and he received the righteousness that comes by faith“. We pilgrims also know what is coming so we need to build an “ark”, not a physical structure of course, but a way of life. We need to prepare our minds for what is to come by being prepared. Of course, we hope that these end times, as described in John’s vision, don’t happen on our lifetimes, but just in case …

Dear God. We look to You for all we need and pray that we will stand firm in our faith, regardless of the circumstances we encounter. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Beastly Miracles

“Then I saw another beast come up out of the earth. He had two horns like those of a lamb, but he spoke with the voice of a dragon. He exercised all the authority of the first beast. And he required all the earth and its people to worship the first beast, whose fatal wound had been healed. He did astounding miracles, even making fire flash down to earth from the sky while everyone was watching.”
Revelation 13:11-13 NLT

The dragon, the second beast, endorses the authority of the first beast, which we assume is the global governmental system prevailing at that time. Perhaps a.k.a. the Antichrist. Note that this system is not just political. It includes the military. It includes attitudes affecting the society and culture. The global government in its entirety won’t just happen overnight. As is happening today, there will be a steady drip, drip, drip of new laws and the repeal or changing of existing legislation, designed to increasingly marginalise, even eliminate, Godly laws and precepts. Supposedly learned and influential people and committees rise up and promote their particular ideologies. Organisations, once considered the bastions of conservative thought, suddenly become “woke”. They will issue dictates that influence their members and add to the ideological “creep” that will ultimately end up as a significant influence in the behaviour of the first “beast”. Misinformation will increase persuading the general population to believe in lies, as is happening in some parts of the world today.

And now this second beast arrives. He appears to be an evangelist for the world system, explaining how wonderful it is, supporting it with miracles, all designed, presumably, to convince those who are unsure, that the first beast is the best. Jesus warned His disciples about false miracles. We read His words in Matthew 24:24, “For false messiahs and false prophets will rise up and perform great signs and wonders so as to deceive, if possible, even God’s chosen ones“. It’s all about deceit. Human beings can be very gullible at times, and can be taken in by all sorts of things. Just look at how many people these days fall victim to scams, following a plausible and logical story presented by someone on the end of a phone. We need to remember that the devil is a liar. Jesus had a conversation with the Pharisees (one of many) in which He said this, “You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.” (‭‭John‬ ‭8:44).

The most deceitful of the devil’s miracles are those that seem to fit in with Scripture verses. In our verses today, we read that the devil, the second beast, made fire flash across the sky. That might awaken thoughts of a Scripture that we have read in the past, such as Matthew 24:27, “For as the lightning flashes in the east and shines to the west, so it will be when the Son of Man comes“. At best we might have doubts about the authenticity of the enemy’s fire crossing the sky; at worst we might think the Son of Man has come. We might rationalise our thoughts and think “Wasn’t that lightning and not fire”? Of course, this is a hypothetical picture, but regardless, we need to be on our guards.

What is all this about a fatal wound that has been healed? We don’t know, of course, though there has been much conjecture. It may be just another of the devil’s deceptive miracles. One thing that has struck me, though, is that this fatal wound is perhaps a counterfeit copy of Jesus’ death at Calvary. He was miraculously raised from the dead by the power of God on that first Easter Sunday, and the reference to the fatal wound that was healed might be the devil trying to copy what happened with Jesus’ amazing resurrection. Just a thought …

Back to what the Apostle John said in his first epistle. We read in 1 John. 4:1, “Dear friends, do not believe everyone who claims to speak by the Spirit. You must test them to see if the spirit they have comes from God. For there are many false prophets in the world“. The End Times will be marked by the spirit of the Antichrist. And there will be many false prophets backing him up. People who will be propagating the devil’s lies in the societies in which we live. In 1 John 4:5, John goes on to say this about these people, “Those people belong to this world, so they speak from the world’s viewpoint, and the world listens to them“. But we pilgrims don’t of course because “… we belong to God, and those who know God listen to us. If they do not belong to God, they do not listen to us. That is how we know if someone has the Spirit of truth or the spirit of deception“. (1 John 4:6).

One last Scripture verse for today. 1 John 4:4, “But you belong to God, my dear children. You have already won a victory over those people, because the Spirit who lives in you is greater than the spirit who lives in the world“. Whatever the world system is like in the last days, we have that assurance that God’s Spirit, residing within us, can overcome all that the enemy throws at us. Must be worth an amen?

Dear God. If there is ever a time when we need to cry out for Your help and protection, it is in these last days. Thank You for Your wonderful loving kindness, Your grace and mercy. We worship You today. Amen.

Another Beast

“Then I saw another beast come up out of the earth. He had two horns like those of a lamb, but he spoke with the voice of a dragon. He exercised all the authority of the first beast. And he required all the earth and its people to worship the first beast, whose fatal wound had been healed. He did astounding miracles, even making fire flash down to earth from the sky while everyone was watching.”
Revelation 13:11-13 NLT

As if one beast wasn’t enough, another one pops up. This one is perhaps the devil himself, because “he spoke with the voice of a dragon“, but what can we glean from these verses?

Firstly, the new beast came “up out of the earth”. Now we know that after the war in Heaven, the devil was cast out down to the earth. So that would be where he would be expected to appear from. And now we have an interesting few words – “He had two horns like those of a lamb”. One thing the devil is good at is how he counterfeits the things of God. There is a good chance he appeared as a lamb, mimicking the Lamb of God. And by so doing he would deceive many people, even Christians, in the process committing one of the biggest scams this earth has ever seen. As Christians we must be very, very careful and discerning. The Apostle Peter warned us. He wrote in 1 Peter 5:8, “Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.” Watch out we must.

In my pilgrimage, I have encountered some Christians who talk a good story but, on closer examination, what they say or do troubles me. They sound very plausible and spiritual but issues start to emerge that undermine them. There’s not so much a problem with what some Christians say, if it can be checked out against the Bible.  The Bible is the final arbiter of what we say, what we believe. One danger that can trap Christians is when someone builds a doctrine around a Bible verse taken out of context. As an example, I can remember some years ago that a church was established around Mark 16:18, “they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on people who are ill, and they will get well.” So they started to bring poisonous snakes to their meetings. However, it is the marginal sayings and actions that don’t have a direct Biblical parallel that can be a problem. I have met people who start a conversation with “I believe God has told me to …” and they then launch into how they are undertaking a set of actions in accordance with what they believe God has said to them. They might be perfectly correct in what they have heard and are now doing, but the danger is that the devil has planted an evil thought in their minds. Remember the devil’s conversation with Eve in Genesis 3:1? “The serpent was the shrewdest of all the wild animals the Lord God had made. One day he asked the woman, “Did God really say you must not eat the fruit from any of the trees in the garden?”” Often the enemy will try and plant doubts about God in our minds and in the process sound very plausible and logical.

It is sometimes very difficult to discern if the still small voice we are hearing is God or someone else. The old Apostle John wrote some words of wisdom in his first epistle, “Dear friends, do not believe everyone who claims to speak by the Spirit. You must test them to see if the spirit they have comes from God. For there are many false prophets in the world“. (1 John 4:1).

Often what we are hearing can be our sinful natures trying to reassert themselves. There are some checks and balances that need to be followed to avoid us falling into a trap set by the forces of evil, whatever their source.
Firstly, is there Scriptural support for what “I believe God has told me to …”. If what we think God is asking us to do is at variance with what it says in Scripture then it is probably not Him speaking.
Secondly, if necessary, it is worth checking out what we think God is saying with a trusted Christian friend or our pastor. Their counsel will be priceless. I like what Proverbs 12:15 says, “The way of fools seems right to them, but the wise listen to advice.”
Thirdly, and particularly if what we believe God has said may lead to a decision that is life changing, we pray and ask God for confirmation. He is our loving Heavenly Father and He won’t want us to succumb to the devil’s ways. And if we don’t get an answer straight away, leave what we think God said on the “back-burner” until confirmation arrives.

Dear Heavenly Father, we know the devil wants to lead us into paths that aren’t right. Please help us and protect us in our pilgrimage through life. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Book of Life

“And the beast was allowed to wage war against God’s holy people and to conquer them. And he was given authority to rule over every tribe and people and language and nation. And all the people who belong to this world worshiped the beast. They are the ones whose names were not written in the Book of Life that belongs to the Lamb who was slaughtered before the world was made. Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand. Anyone who is destined for prison will be taken to prison. Anyone destined to die by the sword will die by the sword. This means that God’s holy people must endure persecution patiently and remain faithful.”
Revelation 13:7-10 NLT

We are spending a second day considering these verses from Revelation 13. “God’s holy people” were having a hard time, with the devil and his minions waging war against them, conquering them, imprisoning them and murdering them. But the scriptures describing John’s vision continue with a reference to those who weren’t Christians. John described them as being those “who belong to this world”. But surely that applies to everyone who lives on Planet Earth, whether Christian or not. Well, actually, it doesn’t. Because the word “world”describes the societal secular values with their anti-God bias.

A person of the world in the context of these verses is someone who is not one of “God’s holy people”. And we know exactly who these people are because their “names were not written in the Book of Life”.  So what is this Book? There are references throughout the Bible to a register kept in Heaven. Every one of God’s children has his or her name recorded in it. Jesus once said to His disciples, as recorded in Luke 10:20, “But don’t rejoice because evil spirits obey you; rejoice because your names are registered in heaven.” Moses was recorded as having a conversation with God about the Israelites’ bad and sinful behaviour. This is how the conversation went, “But now, if you will only forgive their sin—but if not, erase my name from the record you have written!” But the Lord replied to Moses, “No, I will erase the name of everyone who has sinned against me.” (Exodus 31:32-33 NLT). In the Book of Revelation, the register is referred to as the “Lamb’s Book of Life”. (Revelation 21:27). So it is fair to assume that all of God’s holy people, Christians in the true sense, will have their names recorded in this register in Heaven.

But those people whose names are absent from the “Book of Life” are not off the hook. Everything they do is recorded, also in a book. And there will come a day when these books are opened in God’s presence, but more about that when we get to Revelation 20. By default, those people who are not God’s people will be considered to be worshipping the beast. Though that does not necessarily mean that they set up an idol representing the devil and run a pseudo-religious service of worship to it, it does mean that they accept and endorse the world governmental system of which they are a part. A system a.k.a. the beast. It is a black and white scenario. Mankind is allocated into one of two kingdoms – God’s or the devil’s. There are no other options. And the gulf between these two kingdoms is getting wider and wider. Our verses today from Revelation 13 describe the ultimate position where the gulf between the two is almost impossible to bridge.

Once again, we face into the situation that we must pray without ceasing for our loved ones and those in our communities, for our leaders and our society. We pray that God’s grace will continue and that His love will touch them and draw them away from the kingdom of the devil, the kingdom of darkness, into God’s kingdom, the Kingdom of Light. We remember how we made that transition and share our testimony of grace with those whose ears are open to hear our message. 1 Peter 2:9-10 – “But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light. Once you had no identity as a people; now you are God’s people. Once you received no mercy; now you have received God’s mercy.”

Dear Father God. We thank You once again for Your love and grace, for we are now Your very own possession. Help us to share our messages of hope with those around us. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
