The Law of Christ

“When I am with the Gentiles who do not follow the Jewish law, I too live apart from that law so I can bring them to Christ. But I do not ignore the law of God; I obey the law of Christ. When I am with those who are weak, I share their weakness, for I want to bring the weak to Christ. Yes, I try to find common ground with everyone, doing everything I can to save some. I do everything to spread the Good News and share in its blessings.”
1 Corinthians 9:21-23 NLT

Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 9:21 that he obeyed “the law of Christ”. A simple statement, but one that we should look at because anything to do with Jesus must be important. Early in His ministry, Jesus made reference to the Jewish Law of Moses, which described a life of perfect, sinless righteousness that no Israelite had been able to fulfil until Jesus arrived. He said in His Sermon on the Mount, “Don’t misunderstand why I have come. I did not come to abolish the law of Moses or the writings of the prophets. No, I came to accomplish their purpose” (Matthew 5:17). All through the Old Testament, there are prophecies about the coming of Jesus. They came into fruition with His birth, life and death two thousand or so years ago. Jesus brought a new covenant as we read in Hebrews 8:10, “But this is the new covenant I will make with the people of Israel on that day, says the Lord: I will put my laws in their minds, and I will write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people”. In Hebrews 8:13, we read, “When God speaks of a “new” covenant, it means he has made the first one obsolete. It is now out of date and will soon disappear”. Hebrews 10:10, “For God’s will was for us to be made holy by the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ, once for all time”. With the arrival of Jesus, a transition occurred from the old to the new covenant, an earth-shattering moment when the Light of the world provided a way back to God for humanity everywhere.

So, what is the “law of Christ”? One day, Jesus was asked what the most important of all the commandments was. “Jesus replied, “The most important commandment is this: ‘Listen, O Israel! The Lord our God is the one and only Lord. And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.’ The second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’ No other commandment is greater than these”” (Mark 12:29-31). Jesus said that these two commandments form the basis for all the rest, and equally are foundational for the lives of Christians. God, through Jesus, provided the basis for a righteous relationship between Himself and all who believe in His Son, Jesus. And that relationship continues in the way we live with our fellow members of society, and beyond to the world around us. In fact, a world based on these two simple commandments would be totally different to the bad and sad world in which we live, with its wars, misery, and famines. One day, we pilgrims will live in such a world as we know if we read the last pages of the Bible. But in the meantime, the law of Christ is to love God with all of our being and to love our neighbours as we love ourselves.

There have been some who maintain that being without the Law provides an excuse to sin, because sinful actions are covered by God’s grace. However, for the follower of Christ, the avoidance of sin is to be accomplished out of love for God and love for others. Love is to be our motivation. When we recognise the value of Jesus’ sacrifice on our behalf, our response is to be love, gratitude, and obedience. When we understand the sacrifice Jesus made for us and others, our response is to follow His example in showing love to the people around us. Our motivation for overcoming sin should be love, not a desire to obey a series of commandments out of legalistic obligation. We are to follow the law of Christ because we love Him, not so that we can check off a list of commands that we successfully obeyed.

The old Apostle, John, wrote, “Dear friends, let us continue to love one another, for love comes from God. Anyone who loves is a child of God and knows God. But anyone who does not love does not know God, for God is love. God showed how much he loved us by sending his one and only Son into the world so that we might have eternal life through him. This is real love—not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins” (1 John 4:7-10). ‭‭We can only imagine the gracious and loving words as they flowed from his pen, revealing John’s profound understanding of God. John, the disciple whom Jesus loved, wanted everyone to experience what he had found and to experience that same love, and, most importantly, to show it to those around them. And so, for us pilgrims, everything that we do should have love for God and for our fellow human beings at its core. I find that this is easy to write, but to work it out in practice requires a lifetime of relationship with God. He will help us day by day as we navigate our way through life, living God’s way.

Dear Heavenly Father. We love You and dedicate our lives to following You in obedience. Please help us when we struggle with our humanity. Please forgive us when we make mistakes and get it wrong. And lead us, we pray, in Your ways this day and every day. Amen.

Knowing God

“Jesus answered, “If I want glory for myself, it doesn’t count. But it is my Father who will glorify me. You say, ‘He is our God,’ but you don’t even know him. I know him. If I said otherwise, I would be as great a liar as you! But I do know him and obey him. Your father Abraham rejoiced as he looked forward to my coming. He saw it and was glad.””
John 8:54-56 NLT

Jesus told the Pharisees and other religious leaders in the crowd listening to Him that they don’t even know God. The religious people in Jesus’ day probably knew a lot about God but had never come to know Him personally. They had this sense of pride in their knowledge of their Bible. They could recite huge tracts of Scripture. They knew all the rules and regulations, and the Laws of Moses, like the backs of their hands. They lived their lives in a way that was, to them, above reproach. God to them was measurable and containable, kept in a box bounded by their knowledge. And the other less tangible parts of a relationship with God were rationalised within the limits of their knowledge about Him. 

But when it comes to knowing God, the same accusation could be levelled at many religious people today. They think that they are “good” people because they keep the laws of the land, give money to charities, go to church on a Sunday every now and then, and don’t curse and drink to excess. They don’t beat and abuse their spouses and work hard at their professions. “Surely God likes me and would never reject me when it comes to matters of eternal life”, or so they think. 

But Jesus was very clear during His time here on earth, that there was only one way to please Father God, and that was by believing in Him. We of course know John 3:16, “For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.” Later Jesus said to Thomas, one of His disciples, “ … I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me. If you had really known me, you would know who my Father is. From now on, you do know him and have seen him” (John 14:6-7). 

But believing in Jesus does not mean believing the facts about Jesus. It is believing that He came to this world to die for sinners, past, present and future, in His death taking on the punishment for our sin, and instead giving us His righteousness. In the process we come to love Him personally because the enormity of what He did for us at Calvary sinks deep within our souls. The understanding that Jesus, the Son of God, loved me so much that He was willing to die in my place, and that through Him I will receive the gift of eternal life, has turned my life around from being a detached and uninvolved “believer” into someone who knows God as a loving Father. My life is now not about being a “good” person, but about living a life pleasing to the One who loves me. Yes, the fruit of that will be goodness, but that comes from, not for, a relationship with God.

The Pharisees knew much about God. But they were unable to do what Paul did. About the Pharisaical obedience to the Law, he wrote in Philippians 3:7-9, “I once thought these things were valuable, but now I consider them worthless because of what Christ has done. Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage, so that I could gain Christ and become one with him. I no longer count on my own righteousness through obeying the law; rather, I become righteous through faith in Christ. For God’s way of making us right with himself depends on faith”. The Pharisees before Jesus that day in the Temple had an opportunity to believe in Him, but missed it. We must make sure that we don’t miss it either, by taking subtle steps towards replacing our relationship with God with a liturgy that takes less effort.

Dear Father God. We love You because You first loved us. We worship at Your feet today. Amen.

Former Friends

You have had enough in the past of the evil things that godless people enjoy—their immorality and lust, their feasting and drunkenness and wild parties, and their terrible worship of idols. Of course, your former friends are surprised when you no longer plunge into the flood of wild and destructive things they do. So they slander you.
1 Peter 4:3-4 NLT

Friendships develop wherever people meet. At school, college or university. In the workplace. In the gym or at a sporting event. An endless list, but there is something implicit within humans that naturally makes friendships. A common factor is often the lifestyle or interests of the people who meet. I can remember making friends with a lad at school who had similar interests to me. We took apart an old valve portable radio to see if we could repair it. We failed, unfortunately, but forged a friendship in the process. We human beings are relational people and it is very rare to find someone who can be fully satisfied with just their own company. 

Peter wrote that friendships made while enjoying a mutual debauched lifestyle would not survive if one of the friends became a Christian. Straight away, the bonds that previously sustained the relationship would cease to exist, because the believing friend would stop doing the things that previously held them together. A friendship founded on a shaky foundation of course, and one that could not survive for long if the mutual focus was removed. In Peter’s letter, “godless people” were enjoying wild living that was inherently sinful. They enjoyed a hedonistic leisure time, seeking enjoyment by sinful means. Peter was writing to believers who were once part of this lifestyle and who were now being slandered by their “former friends”. I’m sure many of us pilgrims who became believers in adulthood, know exactly how they would have felt. 

The Christian faith is counter-cultural and those who are not believers resent what being a Christian means. Worldly people know of course what is right and what is wrong. There is enough of God within them through their consciences to discern the difference. So when they find someone they know, who was perhaps quite close to them, and who has decided to turn their back on their mutual lifestyles of parties and drinking, of “immorality and lust”, and other sinful ways, they resent them. Their believing friend becomes a former friend because what had united them has been removed.

Jesus had friends. We can read about them in John 15. It’s in that wonderful chapter where Jesus describes Himself as the True Vine. He expresses His love for His disciples, a love that isn’t natural in form and content, but it is the same love which Jesus’s Father loves Him with. John 15:9, “I have loved you even as the Father has loved me. Remain in my love“. And verse 12 continues, “This is my commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you“. Then, in John 15:14-15 we read, “You are my friends if you do what I command. I no longer call you slaves, because a master doesn’t confide in his slaves. Now you are my friends, since I have told you everything the Father told me“. 

We can only aspire to be friends with Jesus if we are prepared to do what he has asked us to do, which is to love our friends as Jesus has loved us. I’m sure we agree that if our former friends, those who are still living a sinful lifestyle, are slandering us, it will be difficult to love them as Jesus loves us. But that is the mark of a Christian. To love the unlovely. To love our enemies. To have compassion on those heading for a lost eternity. In our own strength we have no chance of fulfilling this commandment. But with God’s help it is very possible. When slandered by the Jewish authorities, Jesus didn’t respond. Instead, He even prayed for the men who were hammering the nails into His hands and feet. That’s love.

Dear Father God. Please help us to befriend those who cause us harm. By so doing we do Your will. Amen.

Love One Another

“Owe nothing to anyone—except for your obligation to love one another. If you love your neighbour, you will fulfil the requirements of God’s law. For the commandments say, “You must not commit adultery. You must not murder. You must not steal. You must not covet.” These—and other such commandments—are summed up in this one commandment: “Love your neighbour as yourself.” Love does no wrong to others, so love fulfils the requirements of God’s law.”
Romans 13:8-10 NLT

In these days of mortgages, car loans, credit cards and other forms of debt, this verse, at least at first sight, would seem to be a problem. Was Paul saying that we should save our money so that we can pay in advance for what we need without taking out any form of a loan? If he was in fact saying this then we Christians would be unable to live in our societies in the same way as our neighbours. 

In my Christian life I have been taught that we should always be able to pay our financial debts should that be necessary. In other words, we should be able to realise the equity in our possessions to clear the debts. But that principle needs to be overlaid and reconciled with the basic needs of life, such as a roof over our heads. Paul had already dealt with the need to pay taxes in the previous verses in Romans 13, and this should also be applied to our “taxes” of interest payments when we need to borrow money.

But perhaps “owe nothing to anyone” is more concerned with spiritual debts, particularly the debt of loving God and each other. When asked about which commandment was the greatest, we can read Jesus’ reply in Mark 12:29-31, “Jesus replied, “The most important commandment is this: ‘Listen, O Israel! The Lord our God is the one and only Lord. And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.’ The second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’ No other commandment is greater than these””. Paul wrote that it is our love for our neighbour that is the only significant debt. 

The old Apostle John, the disciple who was probably the closest to Jesus, had a heart so soft that he couldn’t stop writing about the love of God. I can just picture him, with tears in his eyes, writing, “Dear friends, I am not writing a new commandment for you; rather it is an old one you have had from the very beginning. This old commandment—to love one another—is the same message you heard before. Yet it is also new. Jesus lived the truth of this commandment, and you also are living it. For the darkness is disappearing, and the true light is already shining” (1 John 2:7-8). The word “love” appears over nine times in the next chapter where we read, “And this is his commandment: We must believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and love one another, just as he commanded us” (1 John 3:23).

The message we pilgrims must glean from the years since Jesus died is the importance of loving one another. Paul wrote that it is a debt so strong that it is not an option, and it will never be repaid in this life. We go on loving, and loving, knowing that we are doing is what Jesus exampled and commanded. 

Dear Father. We confess our love for You this morning. Please help us find opportunities to love those around us. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Grafted

“If some of the branches have been broken off, and you, though a wild olive shoot, have been grafted in among the others and now share in the nourishing sap from the olive root, do not consider yourself to be superior to those other branches. If you do, consider this: you do not support the root, but the root supports you. You will say then, ‘Branches were broken off so that I could be grafted in.’ Granted. But they were broken off because of unbelief, and you stand by faith. Do not be arrogant, but tremble. For if God did not spare the natural branches, he will not spare you either.”
Romans 11:17-21 NIVUK

Gardeners are good at grafting. To someone who knows little about gardening, such a technique is well beyond my experience, but there are many skilled people who are good at it. What is grafting? Here is a quote from the UK’s Royal Horticultural Society, “The purpose of grafting is to combine one plant’s qualities of flowering or fruiting with the roots of another that offers vigour and resilience”. I have a rose bush in my front garden, purchased some years ago, that consists of just such a hybrid combination of good flowers and a wild rose root and stem. Paul informed his readers that they have been grafted into the olive tree, replacing other branches that had been broken off. Of course, as we considered recently, Jesus is the Source of the “nourishing sap” that supports us and sustains us in our Christian lives. And we are “wild olive shoots” that have been grafted in. The implication is that we Christians are not natural parts of the olive tree, but have been given the opportunity to be joined to the tree through our faith in God.

Paul goes on to make a good point. It would perhaps be easy to feel in some way superior to God’s own people, the Jews, because we have found His grace and love and they haven’t. So we observe how their removal from the Source now makes room for a people saved through His grace. And Paul reminds his readers that those removed, the natural branches, “were broken off because of unbelief”. There is, however, a warning coming from Paul’s pen – be soberly aware that we too can be broken off from the vine, the olive tree, if we lapse into apostasy and unbelief. 

Back to John 15. Jesus Himself taught about the importance of remaining connected to the Vine, we read in John 15:5-6 what Jesus said, “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned.” Indeed a sober warning for us pilgrims. So how do we remain in the vine? How do we avoid being burned in the fire? It’s all about our relationship with God. As Jesus said to the Jewish expert in the Law, the greatest commandment to be followed is, “ … you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength” (Mark 12:30). Our connection to the Source depends on our choices. If we choose to love God in all we do, aligning our lives and behaving how an olive branch should, then we will enjoy the life-giving and nourishing sap that flows unhindered from the throne of God. But if we choose to behave in a way that connects us to a different root system, then we cut ourselves off from God, and our spirits will wither and die. 

We pilgrims know what we must do. And it is not an impossible request that God makes of us. He is our loving Heavenly Father. He has the words of eternal life. Only He can welcome us into our future home in Heaven. And so we worship and praise Him, secure in the knowledge that He loves us and cares for us. He accepts all repentant sinners who come to Him, and He willingly grafts us into His Tree. Through His grace and mercy, there is unlimited room for new branches, and the grafting process is accompanied by much joy. How grateful we are!

Dear Lord Jesus. You are the Vine and we are the branches. Thank You for the life-giving Spirit that flows so freely towards us. Amen.

God’s Standards

“What does all this mean? Even though the Gentiles were not trying to follow God’s standards, they were made right with God. And it was by faith that this took place. But the people of Israel, who tried so hard to get right with God by keeping the law, never succeeded. Why not? Because they were trying to get right with God by keeping the law instead of by trusting in him. They stumbled over the great rock in their path.”
Romans 9:30-32 NLT

In Jesus’s day, there was a group of Jews called the Pharisees. They were extremely religious and very diligent in upholding the Jewish teachings. They were very careful to observe not just the Law, the Jewish Talmud, but also the oral traditions that had been handed down from the time of Moses. Jesus had little time for their legalisms, saying in one of His encounters with them, “What sorrow awaits you Pharisees! For you are careful to tithe even the tiniest income from your herb gardens, but you ignore justice and the love of God. You should tithe, yes, but do not neglect the more important things” (Luke 11:42). What Jesus said highlighted their difficulty – they had become so legalistic and religious that they had lost sight what the Law was put in place for. The intent of the first commandment tended to be overlooked by them – Deuteronomy 6:4-5, “Listen, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord alone. And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength”. Jesus quoted this to them in another encounter, as recorded in Matthew 22:37-40, “Jesus replied, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’ The entire law and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments””.

Paul in his letter outlined the dilemma that the Roman Christians, a mixture of Jews and Gentiles, faced. How could God consider the Gentiles righteous, but not His chosen people, the Jews. Both factions had come to faith in Christ, trusting in Him for their current and future lives, but perhaps there was a remaining thought in the Jewish minds, that this wasn’t very fair. All that effort expended on trying to keep the Law, but to no avail. The Law to the Jews had become a stumbling block. It tripped them up by giving them a false sense of security. Many today claim to be “good people” because they keep the laws of the land, of the societies in which they live. But does this allow them to ignore having a relationship with God? Many Jews claim to have kept the Law, but was there perhaps a residual nagging doubt that they might have missed one?

So, as Christian’s, are we rule followers, or God followers? Do we think that it is enough to be a good member of society, giving to charity, helping our neighbours and so on? Do we believe we are put right with God by making sure we do religious things, like going to church, or do we diligently maintain a relationship with Him, trusting Him, loving Him, following Him? As I have written before, it is all about the state, the condition, of our hearts. God’s standards are too high to be reached by human efforts alone. 

Father God, we fall far short of the perfection You desire. But I thank You that through Jesus we can truly be righteous in Your presence. Thank You. Amen.

Principles for Life

“I have discovered this principle of life—that when I want to do what is right, I inevitably do what is wrong.”
Romans 7:21 NLT

Paul wrote that he had discovered a “principle of life”. And he goes onto say what it is. But it is a principle with negative connotations, that are at odds with what we would normally regard as a “principle” for life. The Bible is full of principles, advice for how life should be lived. Principles for lifting us and encouraging us when needed. Principles for keeping us on the straight and narrow path of the pilgrim’s journey through life towards our Promised Land. So we have Romans 12:2, “Don’t copy the behaviour and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect”. Or there is 1 Peter 2:11-12, “Dear friends, I warn you as “temporary residents and foreigners” to keep away from worldly desires that wage war against your very souls. Be careful to live properly among your unbelieving neighbours. Then even if they accuse you of doing wrong, they will see your honourable behaviour, and they will give honour to God when he judges the world”. Jesus said, as recorded in Matthew 6:19-21, “Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be”. There are many other “principles” embedded in God’s wonderful book, the Bible.

What principles of life drive us pilgrims? It is interesting that, although many a life coach or author has written books with titles such as “30 Life Principles” or “Principles: Life and Work”, for a Christian (in my opinion) there are only two and they set the scene and underpin all other ways to live our lives. We don’t need long lists of rules or suggestions. We just need to follow the answer Jesus gave to a Jewish lawyer who was trying to trick Him with what he thought was a difficult question. We read in Matthew 22:37-40, “Jesus replied, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’ The entire law and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments”. 

God is the only Source of principles for life. Unless principles are founded on what He has to say, then they will fall short of what we really need in life. His guidance won’t let us down.
